CURTAIN RAISERS: New Concert Openers for Band Monday, January 27, 2025

recommended by Ken Tilger and Austin Swack, Band Education Specialists

Capriccio by James Barnes, Grade 3
“Capriccio” is the third composition by James Barnes that resulted from a commission by the Zushi High School Alumni Band in Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan. It is a light-hearted, happy piece in rondo form, full of bell tones in the brass, accompanied by jazzy harmony, long melodic lines and lots of counterpoint in the woodwinds.

Elevation by Chandler L. Wilson, Grade 3
Inspiring from the onset, this work has all the trappings of a modern fanfare – while still being perfectly suited to any concert program. Chandler’s harmonic and rhythmic choices are infectious and will leave both musicians and audiences grinning from ear to ear! A great teaching piece with a lot to focus on, Elevation is a must for your concert repertoire this season!

Excursion! by Lisa Galvin, Grade 3.5
Lisa Galvin’s latest programmatic work, “Excursion!” takes us for a ride on the Erie Canal. Drawing on themes from the well-known “Erie Canal” folk song, this frolicking work transforms that theme into a celebration of the famous stretch of waterway and those who built it. A piccolo soloist gives a nod to the Irish heritage of the workers, and a challenging clarinet solo harkens a raucous German polka that has this work driving to a fun and exhilarating ending!

A New Day Breaking by Travis J. Weller, Grade 3
Written as a celebratory fanfare or concert opener, this work for band is an opportunity to explore the excitement of new day breaking and the possibilities it holds. The work is dedicated to a particular director, but also all who welcome the opportunities and challenges of the new day.

Skyward Spirits (A Micro-Symphony) by JaRod Hall, Grade 3.5
Journey through a tale of flight and fervor. Brass fanfares and woodwind flourishes ignite the sky before drifting into a soulful reflection with expansive melodies. The tempestuous scherzo of storm and spirit leads into a final jubilant dance.

A Tale So Tall by Anthony O’Toole, Grade 3.5
Bursting forth from the first downbeat, this tour-de-force maintains endless momentum and zeal until it reaches its triumphant and ultimately peaceful conclusion.
