recommended by Jennifer F., Sacred Choral Music Specialist
O Sing a Song of Bethlehem arr. Mary McDonald, SATB with piano and optional 13 handbells
This time-honored carol beautifully connects the Nativity to the broader story of Christ’s redemptive work, making it a meaningful choice for both Advent and Easter celebrations. A transparent part for 3 octave handbells adds color and accent.
Advent Peace by Lloyd Larson, SATB with piano
The promise of peace in the midst of the dark nights awaiting the coming of Christ is poetically and elegantly presented in this anthem. The contrasting section seamlessly weaves in VENI EMMANUEL as the anthem then crescendos and tapers to a satisfying and hushed conclusion.
Two Advent Introits arr. Hal Hopson, SATB with piano or organ
From the brisk, crisp “Comfort, Comfort O My People” to the sublime “Lo How a Rose E’er Blooming” this gathering of two introits for Advent is indispensable. Easily learned yet highly effective when presented, Hal Hopson’s legendary and heartfelt craftsmanship shines in this offering.

O Come to Us, Emmanuel by Joseph M. Martin, SAB with piano and optional orchestra
Joseph Martin expertly showcases the expectancy of the season in this captivating, original anthem – a perfect opener for your holiday programming. A compelling original tune raises the curtain for the anthem and leads to the middle section featuring a quote from the familiar Advent hymn tune, VENI EMMANUEL, as it builds in intensity.
O Come, O Come, Emmanuel arr. Brenda E. Austin, SAB with piano and optional handbells
This Quick Study Choral, arranged by Hope’s handbell editor, Brenda Austin, is written for SATB choir and appropriately includes an optional 3 octave handbell part. Easily learned, with its familiar lyrical melody and harmonies, this Advent favorite calls for us to “Rejoice!” as we anticipate Emmanuel’s arrival.
Prepare the Way: A Candle Lighting Ceremony by Joel Raney, SATB with piano and optional congregation & 8 handbells
Designed to support the lighting of the Advent candles, this includes a choral opening followed by a call and response litany with piano underscore, then a text to be read with the lighting of the candle. As it concludes, the choir comes back in with the option of adding the congregation for a final refrain. There are five readings, one for each candle. A reproducible part for the congregation is included.
