New piano collections: Gospel & Spirituals Tuesday, July 13, 2010
Here at Stanton’s Sheet Music, our piano department has been pouring over new publications to find the very best to suggest to you. We are excited to welcome Mary McDonald to our store for a free sacred piano clinic on Saturday, August 14th, and we hope you’ll join us here in the store for this special event! In the meantime, here is a “sneak preview” of some of the collections that will be featured:
Gospel Gold, Sacred Treasures for Piano
Some of today’s best pianists and arrangers have gathered to celebrate the best timeless gospel hymns in a new compilation sure to be a hit with any church pianist. Includes: Stand Up, Stand Up for Jesus, ‘Tis So Sweet to Trust in Jesus, Just a Closer Walk with Thee, Do Lord, Rock of Ages, He Keeps Me Singing and many more.
Spirituals We Love
In this fourth installment of the “Hymns We Love†series, six of your favorite arrangers apply their skills to the melodies and rhythms of the American spiritual. Because spirituals share roots with many popular music styles, you will find more than a touch of jazz in this collection, such as Mary McDonald's swinging Joshua and a driving Didn't My Lord Deliver Daniel? by Mark Hayes. But there is also a sensitive and beautiful side to this repertoire, as seen in Larry Shackley's arrangement of My Lord, What a Morning and Lloyd Larson's treatment of There Is a Balm in Gilead. As in previous volumes, each selection is introduced by a personal note from the arranger.
Sweet By and By
Dust off the upright and reminisce as you travel back in time with these ten cherished hymns from the heritage of our faith. Each setting is carefully crafted in a unique style that best represents the message of the hymn’s text. Whether tender, flowing melodic lines or upbeat, gospel-style rhythmic tunes, pianists and congregations alike will enjoy the fresh spirit of each arrangement. This gifted composer’s collection of these hymn favorites reflects her personal style and unique touch. Believing the text is the inspiration for the music, she has included the hymn writer’s text prior to each arrangement. Take time to reflect on the words and let the music flow expressively from your hands, reminding us all why these are great hymns that will never grow old.
