Lead Me to Calvary: Anthems for Lent 2020 29 January, 2020

on the mount called calvary lloyd larsonrecommended by Judy H. and Jennifer F., Sacred Choral Music Specialists

On the Mount Called Calvary by Lloyd Larson, SATB with piano and optional narration & cello
Lloyd Larson and Carol M. Hodge collaborated on this stirring anthem, featuring the tune WONDROUS LOVE. It incorporates a scripture reading from Luke 23 and can be enhanced with an optional cello part. This anthem is easy to prepare yet extremely effective for Good Friday reflection.

Lead Me to Calvary arr. Lloyd Larson, SATB a cappella
This delicate a cappella setting of “Lead Me to Calvary” is a reflection upon the significance of Calvary. Careful four-part voice leading helps choirs successfully execute a cappella singing. A rich choral background supports an expressive alto solo on the second verse, before the piece returns to homophonic texture and a soft, prayerful ending.

wondrous love wes cameronWondrous Love by Wes Cameron, SAB with piano
Asking, “Why would the Son of God lay down his life for me?” this Good Friday ballad exalts the “wondrous love the Savior showed for me!” Opening with a hint of the hymn “What Wondrous Love Is This,” this Lenten anthem is easily learned and makes a powerful statement.

Who Is This? by Victor C. Johnson, SATB with piano
“Who is this, despised, rejected, mocked, insulted, beaten, bound? ‘Tis Christ, the man of sorrows, dying in agony. ‘Tis Christ, the suff’ring Savior, hanging there on Calvary’s tree.” Victor C. Johnson’s anthem is a dramatic yet simple reflection on Christ’s Crucifixion. Focusing on the immense sacrifice at Calvary, it is an excellent choice for a contemplative moment in a Holy Week or Good Friday service.

on a hill far away joseph martinOn a Hill Far Away by Joseph M. Martin, SATB with piano
This original musical setting in a contemplative, minor tonality gives a distinct character to the familiar hymn text by George Bennard. With comfortable ranges and very accessible four-part writing, it is an excellent fit for smaller choirs or those looking for a quickly learned piece for Holy Week.

Lenten Meditation by Jay Althouse, 2-part mixed with piano
Solid melodic writing combines with fluid inner choral lines to create a memorable choral anthem ideal for the Lenten season. New voicings for Two-Part Mixed, SSA and TTBB are now available.

Mercy’s Promise by Patti Drennan, SATB with piano and optional oboe or C instrument
More than just a meditation for Good Friday, Rose Aspinall’s impassioned text about the sacrifice of Christ on the cross is a call to “Look up!” and receive the gift of salvation. Set in a minor key in 12/8 meter with an optional oboe or C instrument part, this stirring anthem is powerful and expressive.

Journey by William Palange, Grade 3
This uplifting work celebrates the unpredictable twists, turns, and challenges we all face in our lives. Embracing each experience in that journey is essential to who we ultimately become.

River Poem by Tyler S. Grant, Grade 2.5
Rivers have often served as a metaphor for life’s journey – starting in one place and traveling to somewhere unknown. This metaphor is depicted in a serene and contemplative work that uses a variety of colors and harmonies unique to young bands. Opulent mallet parts interact with optional piano to depict water gracefully cascading downwards. Gorgeous!

tempus motus steven pyterTempus Motus by Steven Pyter, Grade 2.5
Mahatma Gandhi famously said, “the future depends on what you do today.” “Tempus Motus” was written to express the hope, determination, and energy that can spark change. In Latin, “Tempus” means time and “Motus” means motion. Meaningful change often takes time to accomplish, sometimes generations. This energetic and inspiring band work celebrates the change brought on by positive human effort.

“The Conductor’s Toolbox”: Resources for Leaders 22 January, 2020

conductor's toolbox richard sparksrecommended by Jen Sper and Lora Moore, School Choral Music Specialists

The Conductor’s Toolbox by Richard Sparks
What do coaches, master teachers, and studies of the psychology of learning have to teach us about conducting? It turns out, quite a bit. In this concise yet insightful volume, Richard Sparks draws from years of experience in the professional choral world and from his time teaching at two leading universities to help choral conductors transform their craft and create truly artful experiences. He gains inspiration from legendary college basketball coach John Wooden and shares striking and refreshing parallels between coaching sports teams and conducting music ensembles. Sparks draws equally from research in the fields of teaching and the psychology of learning – and what a conductor can take from those areas as well. Just as an artisan builds a set of skills and learns the tools of the trade, conductors too must build a box of tools to help them learn, understand, and interpret music; lead rehearsals; and conduct.

“The Conductor’s Toolbox” conveniently and succinctly compiles these tools. Highlights include: assessing yourself and your choir; using modeling; developing good habits in yourself and your choir; learning and teaching new skills; rehearsing more efficiently; teaching fundamental elements of music; selecting repertoire that improves your and your choir’s skills; and improving your planning and pacing of rehearsals.

This book is for the young conductor starting out who wants to build a truly solid craft. It is also for the experienced conductor who wonders how to move to the next level, reenergize, and grow.

aligning voices dean luethiAligning Voices by Dean Luethi
This book of versatile, pedagogically based choral warm-ups helps conductors take full advantage of this important time in every rehearsal, providing tools for assessment, musicianship, and ensemble unity at the same time singers are warming up their voices.

The exercises in “Aligning Voices” are organized into nine chapters, each focusing on a different area of choral technique: rhythm, brilliance, intonation, balance, dynamics, consonants, beginning consonants, diphthongs and ending consonants, and vowels.

Each warm-up contains two or more parts, allowing the director to work toward improving choral sound in a texture similar to that of the repertoire. Moreover, author Dean Luethi provides every warm-up in three voicings – SATB, SSAA, and TTBB – and sequentially organizes them by difficulty level. In addition, each section begins by defining the objective for each exercise and offering practical solutions for many of the common challenges choirs face in each area. These exercises go well beyond simply warming up the voice. This resource is a must-have for all choral directors looking to make the most of their warm-up time. A companion student edition that contains only the music notation for each warm-up exercise is also available.

rehearsing the choir stephen sieckRehearsing the Choir by Stephen Sieck
If we could sit down with some of the best choral conductors of our time, what might we learn? In this book, directors at Iowa State University, University of Kentucky, University of Louisville, University of Michigan, Michigan State University, Penn State University, St. Olaf College, and University of Southern California are interviewed. The book shares these directors approaches to: recruitment, auditions, and singer placement in ensembles; selection auditions, and singer placement in ensembles; rehearsal planning; choral timbres and vocal pedagogy; intonation; kinesthetic learning and choreography; traditions and choral culture. Interviews with students and observations of live rehearsals complement these director interviews to provide readers with a comprehensive look at how these choral programs consistently achieve success.

practical guide to choral conducting bradley ellingboeA Practical Guide to Choral Conducting by Bradley Ellingboe
With nearly 40 years of experience in the choral field, esteemed conductor and composer Bradley Ellingboe shares his wisdom, tips, and practical advice in an accessible and enjoyable style. His pragmatic approach will help you learn the right questions to ask for your own unique situation, and will help you learn to arrive at your own solutions.

The interrelated chapters guide you through the necessary steps for preparing a successful concert or season, making effective rehearsal plans, efficiently preparing your scores and conducting gestures, problem solving issues of vocal technique, and much more. The appendix of correlated, reproducible worksheets, templates, music, and handouts will help you more easily organize your plans and apply the useful suggestions.

just add music scott watsonrecommended by Dan C. and Megan W., Orchestra Specialists

Just Add Music by Scott Watson, Grade 1

The lighthearted A theme makes way for the energetic and driving B and C sections. Written in rondo form, it follows a group of friends on their summer adventure. Try having students write their own narration to fit the music!

subterranean kathryn griesingerSubterranean by Kathryn Griesinger, Grade 1.5
Go underground to explore the deep, dark sounds of the orchestra’s lowest strings. A ponderous, minor theme weaves through every section of the orchestra along with a few easy off-beat rhythms. The absence of low 2 finger patterns make this helpful for teaching and reinforcing note reading on the G, C, and E (bass) strings, while also being extremely satisfying musically.
TEACH • note reading on lowest strings, warm, broad bow strokes
ORCHESTRATION • equal time for everyone on their low string
PERFORMANCE • mysterious e minor could work for Halloween

TEACH • using easy half/quarter/eighth rhythms in changing meters
ORCHESTRATION • all are playing (and counting!) all the time
PERFORMANCE • study cross-curriculum with ancient history/art

Women at the Piano 16 January, 2020

PL1059Women at the Piano: Solo Works by Female Composers of the Nineteenth Century arr. Nicholas Hopkins
“Women at the Piano” sheds light on the unheard music and untold story of female composers of the nineteenth century, offering not only pristine editions of neglected and forgotten musical works, but also insights into the historical context and the prejudicial environments in spite of which these remarkable pieces emerged. With selections from Clara Wieck-Schumann, Maria Wolowska-Szymanowska, Helene Riese-Liebmann, Fanny Mendelssohn-Hensel and many others, this edition is a worthy entry into the concert pianist’s canonical library.

Women composers were not encouraged by the 19th century world. Women’s reason for engaging in music was to enhance their chances of marrying well, since performing music displayed a young lady’s culture and refinement. These women were breaking the mold, composing serious works, such as Clara Wieck-Schumann’s Prelude and Fugue #3 Opus 16, or Sophie Menter’s Romance Opus 5.

A Voyage to Freedom: Americana for Concert Band 15 January, 2020

american fiddle tune variations carl strommenrecommended by Ken T., Band Education Specialist

American Fiddle Tune Variations by Carl Strommen, Grade 4
“Turkey in the Straw” is a well-known American folk song from the early 19th century. It is suggested that the first part of the song was derived from the ballad “My Grandmother Lived in Yonder Little Green,” which was further derived from the Irish ballad, “The Old Rose Tree.” Originally written for fiddle players, it was first popularized in the 1820’s by touring minstrel shows.

American River Portrait by Brant Karrick, Grade 4
“American River Portrait” is a wonderful sonic tapestry based upon the famous song by Stephen Foster. Composer Brant Karrick has created a stunningly beautiful setting of this song with interesting, lush, and unique harmonies. This is truly a one-of-a-kind musical presentation that will naturally develop the musicianship of your advancing ensemble. It is a perfect example of why the music of Brant Karrick has become a staple on state music lists around the country.

chorale from concord clare grundmanChorale from “Concord” by Clare Grundman, Grade 3
Commissioned by The United States Marine Band and premiered in 1987, Clare Grundman’s “Concord” has remained a staple in the wind band repertoire. The middle section of this work is a beautiful chorale based on the early hymn “America” composed by William Billings. Adapted here as a stand alone piece for younger bands, this is a stunning example of lyric writing and glorious harmonies.

Songs from the Great War arr. Andrew Glover, Grade 3.5
Marking the centennial of World War I, also known as “The Great War,” this medley highlights seven songs popular during this era: “It’s A Long Way To Tipperary,” “Good Morning, Mr. Zip-Zip-Zip,” “Roses Of Picardy,” “How Ya Gonna Keep ‘Em Down On The Farm?” “Keep The Home Fires Burning,” “Pack Up Your Troubles In Your Old Kit Bag,” and “Over There!” Perfect for Veteran’s Day, Memorial Day, or any concert situation, and especially well-suited for adult community bands.

star spangled banner ed huckebyThe Star-Spangled Banner arr. Ed Huckeby, Grade 3
Ed Huckeby’s concert setting of the National Anthem is bold, creative, and filled with patriotic energy. Using an imaginative mixture of 3/4 and 4/4, the rhythms and harmonies are always respectful to the original melody, yet distinctly fresh and innovative. An optional vocal/choral part is included. This arrangement is destined to become an absolute “standard” favorite for your ensemble members and audience.

A Voyage to Freedom by James Swearingen, Grade 2.5
History was made in 1620 when a merchant ship called the Mayflower set sail from Plymouth, England. Typically, the cargo would have consisted of wine and dry goods, but on this trip the ship carried 102 passengers, all of them seeking to start a new life on the far side of the Atlantic. It should be noted that this musical adventure includes all the literary ingredients that make for a fascinating story: freedom, survival, reflection, hope and the remarkable feeling of triumph.

worthy is the lamb lloyd larsonWorthy Is the Lamb! by Lloyd Larson
“Worthy Is the Lamb!” is the compelling story of God’s plan to deliver all people from the clutches of sin and death. Lloyd Larson presents this powerful reminder that Isaiah’s prophetic words were fulfilled in Jesus: “Surely He has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows. He was pierced for our transgressions; crushed for our iniquities; upon Him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and by His wounds we are healed” (Isaiah 53:4–5).

Flexibly conceived for Lent, Holy Week, or Eastertide programming, each of the three sections may be presented during the weeks or days leading up to Easter, or the entire musical may be presented a single worship experience. The Owner’s Manual to the Voice 13 January, 2020

oupusa-0199964680-fThe Owner’s Manual to the Voice by Rachael Gates with co-authors L. Arick Forrest, M.D. & Kerri Obert, M.A., C.C.S./S.L.P.
Singers must equip themselves with enough knowledge to clearly convey specific sensations and difficulties with their instrument. Understanding of potential dangers and disorders, familiarity with a variety of medical procedures, and comprehension in various facets of diagnosis and treatments empower singers to “own,” just like other musicians, their instrument.

“The Owner’s Manual to the Voice” provides singers with the knowledge necessary to communicate effectively and in intelligent terms about their instrument, especially when conversing with medical professionals. Beginning with an overview of the vocal anatomy, lead author Rachael Gates, and co-authors L. Arick Forrest, M.D. and Kerri Obert, M.A., C.C.C/S.L.P, proceed through detailed discussions of caring for the voice and common causes of vocal changes and problems before guiding the reader through the process of choosing, talking to, and working with an ENT. In so doing, they give insights that any professional voice user – whether singer, actor, broadcaster, politician, teacher, preacher, or lawyer – will find helpful if not essential. The men introduce the main melody in stunning four-part harmony, before the women join at the first chorus. With artful divisi writing and many moments of unbridled emotion, this work is sure to become a choral classic.

Featuring unique harmonic twists and turns, and a gradual broadening of the original melody that mimics the movement of the river itself. A refreshing reimagining of a treasured classic.

Exsultate Deo! by Greg Gilpin, SSA with piano
This exhilarating concert/festival original works equally well as an opening or closing number. Featuring a celebratory Latin text, it begins with a declamatory vocal introduction which then moves into high gear showcasing driving rhythms and multi-meters in both voices and piano. The more legato middle section provides an interesting contrast before returning to the main theme, transitioning to an uplifting key change, restating the declamatory section and pulling out all the stops for a dynamic conclusion. Teaching moments abound in this exciting work for developing choirs.

Written for the University of Kentucky Men’s Chorus, Jefferson Johnson, Director for the 2018 ACDA Southern Division Conference, this is a striking piece for men’s choir. The text, in Latin, from Romans, is a vibrant description of creation’s struggle. The music is rich and expressive.

Gloria Patri et Filio by Antonio Vivaldi/arr. Patrick M. Liebergen, TBB with piano & optional cello
From master composer Antonio Vivaldi’s “Laetatus Sum” (a setting of Psalm 121), this edition brings the brief work to today’s choirs. Featuring an accessible Latin text and a lively optional cello part, this well-crafted arrangement is an ideal introduction to many of the conventions of Baroque style, including terraced dynamics and the alternation between a small group (or soloist) and the full ensemble.

coast to coast joe derhakerecommended by Ken T., Band Education Specialist

Coast to Coast: An American Musical Road Trip arr. Joe Derhake, Grade 3.5
Travel across the country from New York to San Francisco and points in between, as this medley drives you through some of the best-known songs about U.S. cities and states in just a few minutes! Just be sure to hold onto your seat. Though the ride begins with a smooth cruise, there are a few tricky curves in the road ahead, and maybe even an “Easter egg” or two. Featuring: “The Sidewalks of New York,” “My Kind of Town (Chicago Is),” “Kansas City, Here I Come,” “The Yellow Rose of Texas,” “Viva Las Vegas,” and “I Left My Heart in San Francisco.”

la mariposa lorrie baumLa Mariposa by Lorrie Baum, Grade 3.5
“La Mariposa,” with its very catchy and memorable lilting melodies, gives students exposure to Latin music in the form of the Mambo. The Mambo is a syncopated style of music and dance that originated in Cuba in the early 1900s. Alternating between D major and D minor, the melodic material in “La Mariposa” is evenly distributed between the high and low woodwinds and brass. Your students and audiences alike will love this piece!

Petersborough Sleighride by Richard Ellenberg/arr. Andrew Glover, Grade 3
Are you tired of the same old sleigh ride? Then jump aboard the “Petersborough Sleighride,” a delightful work which depicts a horse-drawn trek through the wintry backroads. A noted favorite of European salon music, this charming piece will be a favorite of your winter concert – or even summer concerts, to help cool off your audience! Listeners will smile and tap their feet as this music paints a picture of a wintery romp through the snow. Irresistible!

Sweet Horn Rag by Al Sweet, Grade 3
The F Horn section provides harmonic and rhythmic structure to the band, but does not often get a chance to be featured. “Sweet Horn Rag” was written to give them a chance to show their beauty and versatility.

three appalachian songs dwight biglerThree Appalachian Songs arr. Dwight Bigler, Grade 4
The classic early American folk songs “Cluck Old Hen,” “Poor Wayfarin’ Stranger” and “Sourwood Mountain” are beautifully set for band and chorus in this appealing concert suite. Arranged with various performance options available, these songs may be performed individually as well as together in a suite format. In addition, these can be performed with band alone, chorus and piano alone, or with combined groups.

A Trombone Family Reunion by Henry Fillmore/arr. Andrew Glover, Grade 3.5
Between 1908 and 1929, Henry Fillmore composed a series of fifteen novelty pieces featuring the trombone section with band. These became collectively known as “The Trombone Family,” with names and subtitles connecting them in sort of a musical genealogy. The three most popular family members, “Lassus Trombone,” “Miss Trombone,” and “Shoutin’ Liza Trombone” join together in a whimsical way for “A Trombone Family Reunion,” along with some “shirttail relatives” depicted by famous trombone excerpts from the symphonic repertoire. Included are quotations from “Blue Bells Of Scotland,” “Symphony No. 4” by Tchaikovsky, “Tannhauser Overture,” “Second Hungarian Rhapsody,” “Prelude to Act III of Lohengrin,” “Hallelujah Chorus,” “Ride of the Valkyries,” “Turkey In The Straw,” and a few other surprises. Great fun!

From the Broadway Stage 03 January, 2020

dear theodosia hamilton andy beckrecommended by Jen Sper and Lora Moore, School Choral Music Specialists

Treat your audience to a true NYC theater experience by programming choral selections from the Broadway stage in your next concert. Our School Choral Specialists have recommended the very best the theater district has to offer! Choose memorable songs from “Hamilton,” “Waitress,” “Newsies,” “The Prom,” “Matilda,” and more for SATB, TTBB, SSA and 2-part voicings.

Dear Theodosia (from Hamilton) arr. Andy Beck, SATB with piano & optional strings
This touching folk ballad, sung by Aaron Burr and Alexander Hamilton to their newborn babies, provides a tender moment in the middle of the smash hit hip-hop musical “Hamilton.” Rhythmic yet lyrical, the melody winds beautifully through the center of the vocal range, the harmonies provide tangible warmth, and the words speak clearly about the dreams parents hold for their children.

raise you up just be kinky boots mac huffRaise You Up/Just Be (from Kinky Boots) arr. Mac Huff, SATB with piano & optional combo
“Kinky Boots” was the winner for Best Musical and Best Original Score at the 2013 Tony Awards. Written by 1980’s pop icon Cyndi Lauper, this show is wrapping up an impressive six-year run on Broadway in April 2019. This show-closing and show-stopping number features the entire company with chances for multiple solos, weaving from funk to pop in breathtaking fashion. Don’t miss your chance to program this dynamite closer!

Zazz (from The Prom) arr. Andy Beck, SATB with piano & optional combo
From the writers of the popular Broadway musical “Elf,” this showbiz showstopper will bring the house down! Flashy lyrics offer several laugh lines such as “if your hands are shaking, just turn ’em into jazz hands,” plus a humorous shout-out to world-famous choreographer Bob Fosse, suggesting he would “make the people have a step-ball-change of heart.” Fun to sing, stage, and perform – with razzle dazzle to spare!

she used to be mine waitress mac huffShe Used to Be Mine (from Waitress) arr. Mac Huff, SSA with piano & optional rhythm
Here is a beautiful ballad from the Broadway musical “Waitress.” Emotions are high in the show as Jenna struggles with her sense of worth and her changing circumstances. This arrangement captures these emotions and asks your singers to dig deep inside to bring them to the stage.

Welcome to the 60s (from Hairspray) arr. Roger Emerson, 2-part with piano
“Hairspray”’s humble beginnings in John Waters’ 1988 satirical film would go on to see massive success on Broadway in 2002, and later, a movie musical. Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman penned original songs for the production that proudly feature their composers’ signature: you just can’t get those melodies out of your head!

gaston beauty and the beast roger emersonGaston (from Beauty and the Beast) arr. Roger Emerson, TTBB with piano & optional combo
The thought of the virile Gaston will entice full sounds from your young men’s choir. Virility and humor mix to bring out the best in the singers.

Stars (from Les Misérables) arr. Roger Emerson, TTBB with piano
“Les Misérables” is one of the most popular musicals of all times. One of the most beautiful ballads in the show is “Stars” sung by Javert. He sings of his unwavering quest to pursue justice. This arrangement taps into the powerful and emotional moments from this song and brings them to life.

Revolting Children (from Matilda) arr. Mac Huff, SAB with piano & optional combo
“Revolting Children” is anything but, as far as the title suggests. Tim Minchin’s mixed-meter rock spectacle is a joy for the ears with a staunch and resilient nature. Building harmonies, perfectly suited for choirs, will reward melodrama as the calls to rebel and revolt reverberate throughout your concert hall!

seize the day newsies mac huffSeize the Day (from Newsies) arr. Mac Huff, 3-part mixed with piano
Now in a brand-new Discovery arrangement for younger choirs! This showstopper from the award-winning composer Alan Menken was featured in the Disney film and Broadway musical “Newsies.” Featuring a powerful “brotherhood” text, it begins with a compelling chorale-like opening and then explodes into rhythm that encourages us all to “seize the day!”

When I Grow Up (from Matilda) arr. Roger Emerson, 2-part with piano & optional combo
A little bit cheeky, a little bit naughty, but completely refreshing, multi-faceted composer Tim Minchin gives the 2011 West End adaptation of Roald Dahl’s 1988 book “Matilda” a quick-witted and wry look into the hopes and desires of the friendly school children surrounding the title character. Bouncy and idiosyncratic, Emerson’s arrangement captures the wonder!
