Music from Around the World: For Young Singers Monday, February 22, 2021

recommended by Jen Sper and Lora Moore, School Choral & Classroom Music Specialists

Banuwa Yo arr. Mark Weston, 2-part with piano and optional percussion
Mark Weston created an easy-to-learn arrangement of a popular folk song from the West African coast that depicts a caring relative or friend consoling a young child who misses her family. The voices sing the melody in unison before splitting and singing it again as a round. Simple harmony and gentle counterpoint bring the work to a satisfying end. An explanation of the song, a pronunciation guide, and percussion notes for the optional parts are included.

The Boatie Rows arr. Mandy Miller, Unison with piano
This simple strophic, Scottish folk song is arranged for young singers. Stylish musically and using authentic Scottish dialect with a very simple pronunciation guide this is a wonderful arrangement for your beginning singers.

I Will Dream of You, Doraji arr. Mary Donnelly & George L.O. Strid, 2-part with piano and optional flute
This gentle, flowing piece combines thematic elements of two popular Korean folk songs, “Doraji” and “Arirang.” The selection is performed in English and Korean, with the Korean written phonetically in the choral parts. The elegant piano part and optional included flute part contribute to the beautiful and pensive effect.
