Breaking Through by Brian Balmages, Grade 3.5-4
Break down barriers with this energetic, joyous celebration of creativity and possibility! The incessant rhythmic drive combines with a flurry of woodwind flourishes and heroic brass fanfares, resulting in a high-energy barnburner that is destined to bring down the house!

Ars Vitae by Larry Clark, Grade 3.5
Art is Life! This sentiment is abundant in this wonderful new work for concert band by Larry Clark. Full of flourish and thick brass writing harkening back to the days of Alfred Reed, “Ars Vitae” has everything you could want in a contest and festival work.

Gift of Hope by Scott Watson, Grade 3.5
Hope helps each of us face life’s challenges with courage and optimism. “Gift of Hope” by Scott Watson captures musically both of these aspects of hope. Opening dramatically, the piece soon settles into an upbeat, joyful main theme. Slower contrasting material follows, building from a tender, transparently scored opening to a climax full of resolve. The optimistic main theme returns, leading to a dramatic, heroic conclusion.

Springer Mountain by Frank McKinney, Grade 3.5
This spirited overture by Frank McKinney features contrasting melodies that explore a variety of harmonic textures, inspired by the excitement and anxious anticipation of hikers as they climb Springer Mountain to set out on the adventure of a lifetime. Springer Mountain rises amidst the Blue Ridge Mountains between Ellijay and Dahlonega, Georgia, and is the southern terminus of the famous Appalachian Trail.

Portals by Robert W. Smith, Grade 3.5
Written during the pandemic of 2020-2021, “Portals” was inspired by the digital portals or windows that allowed us to view our world. From the human interaction and expression through videoconference windows, to the living room television screens that served as portals to our outside world, our views drastically changed. Featuring soloists as well woodwind and brass choirs, this joyous composition builds to a bold and majestic full ensemble statement and exciting conclusion. Optional middle school parts are included allowing for full pyramid concert performance. Written for the live concert band or virtual ensemble performance, “Portals” will be a valued addition to your next concert as we celebrate the combined musical voices of our world.
