Dragon Dance by Michael Story, Grade 0.5
The Dragon Dance is a popular event in traditional Chinese culture, especially during Chinese New Year celebrations. Originating during the Han Dynasty (206 B.C.-200 A.D), the dance is carried out by a team of performers that carry the dragon on poles, fluidly mimicking its supposed movements. Drums, cymbals, and gongs usually provide the musical accompaniment to this beautiful and colorful performance.

Flight of the Thunderbird by Richard L. Saucedo, Grade 2
First published in 2004, Richard Saucedo’s “Flight of the Thunderbird” has remained a popular choice for contest and festival for young players. Skillfully scored in this new edition for flexible instrumentation, this exciting work in one tempo will sound great with an ensemble of any size.

Jungle Dance by Brian Balmages, Grade 2.5
This captivating musical celebration portrays the strong energy of all life in the jungle. The piece cleverly uses a melody that never changes throughout the entire work – rather, all the surrounding harmonies and textures constantly evolve as the music develops. Ultimately, the melody is layered on top of itself numerous times along with the countermelodies that have been heard throughout the work. A large battery of percussion completes the orchestration in a work that is certain to impress.

Scorpion! by Richard L. Saucedo, Grade 1.5
Here’s a flexible edition of Richard’s popular “Scorpion!” scored for just four parts plus percussion. Written for second-year players, you can mix and match the parts to fit the needs of your ensemble.

State Anthem of Ukraine arr. Paul Murtha, Grade 2
Showing support for the people of Ukraine, here is a version of their beautiful and poignant national anthem scored for flexible instrumentation.

Storm Chaser by Christopher Kyle Green, Grade 1.5
The summer season in the southern United States rumbles with quick, intense storms most afternoons. Flashes of lightning, clapping thunder, and drenching rainfall are characteristics of the massive, anvil-shaped thunderhead clouds that roll in during the heat of the day. Scored for flexible instrumentation, “Storm Chaser” is inspired by the intensity of these storms and the adrenaline that flows through the veins of those that experience the wrath of Mother Nature.

When Boombuckets Come Marching Home arr. Joseph Benjamin Earp, Grade 1.5
A well-known patriotic song from the American Civil War to welcome home loved ones fighting in the war, “When Johnny Comes Marching Home” has been skillfully arranged for young bands to feature the percussion section using Boomwhackers® and plastic buckets. We know you will enjoy this exciting arrangement as we feature our guest artists from the percussion section!

Zia, Zia! by Claude T. Smith/arr. Joseph Benjamin Earp, Grade 2
“Zia, Zia!” is festive and lively, with all the flavor of a Spanish parade. Claude T. Smith has done a masterful job as he created this Spanish March. This flexible arrangement allows ensembles to perform the work with as few as ten musicians providing accessibility and flexibility for numerous instrumentation needs, while still allowing a full ensemble sound.
