MERRILY WE ROLL ALONG: New Titles from Stage & Screen Wednesday, January 15, 2025

recommended by Jen Sper and Lisa Springer, School Choral Music Specialists

Merrily We Roll Along (from Merrily We Roll Along) arr. Jason Robert Brown, SATB divisi with piano
The stars are aligned for Stephen Sondheim’s 1981 Broadway “failure”, which, through the eyes of time (which the musical expertly navigates, to an astounding effect), has been re-appraised as a under appreciated masterpiece from the late composer. Jason Robert Brown takes the many permutations of the main theme and pares them down to this exquisite and genuine choral arrangement.

A Brand New Day (Everybody Rejoice) (from The Wiz) arr. Connor Warren Smith, SATB with piano and optional rhythm
From the Motown-inspired musical “The Wiz,” this funky, feel-good song is a joyful celebration of fresh starts and endless possibilities. Optimistic lyrics, a funky groove, and an upbeat hook create the ultimate opener or closer for four-part show and concert choirs. Don’t miss our exuberant SoundTrax or perform with live guitar, bass, and drums.

Something About This Night (from Finding Neverland) arr. Roger Emerson, SATB with piano and optional rhythm
Sparkling with the spirit of Broadway magic, “Something About This Night” (from Finding Neverland) comes alive in this showstopping choral arrangement by Roger Emerson. Stellar vocal parts offer energetic harmonies and several opportunities for solo vocalists to shine. Easy to learn, yet instantly impressive.

Great Expectations (from The Outsiders) arr. Mac Huff, SATB with piano and optional rhythm
Coming-of-age is neither organized nor predictable. S.E. Hinton’s 1967 novel “The Outsiders,” brought first to the screen in 1983 and then to a Best Musical-winning stage production in 2024, highlights the parallels between art and life, as protagonist brothers read the Charles Dickens’ classic and muse about what life has in store for them.

Stay Gold (from The Outsiders) arr. Roger Emerson, SAB with piano and optional rhythm
Amidst the turmoil and angst the young protagonists endure in the Tony-winning musical “The Outsiders,” comes this guitar-based reprise championing a message of resilience. In the face of adversity, you can find beauty in the simple things in the world if one only remembers to look.

Corn (from Shucked) arr. Eric Van Cleave, SATB with piano and optional combo
Musical theater fans will be all “ears” for this barn-burner from Broadway’s “Shucked.” It’s a truncated version of the a-maize-ing opening number. Sing about the world’s most useful crop in a hilarious three-minute arrangement that hits all the highlights of the corny crowd-pleaser. Kicks off with a theatrical duet, breaks into a bouncy two-beat, includes a kernel of a kickline, plus some full gospel sangin’ at the end – wow!

What Was I Made For (from Barbie) arr. Jennifer Lucy Cook, SATB with piano
The “Barbie” movie deepened connections to the iconic toy doll with a sophisticated story and compelling soundtrack. Billie Eilish’s rumination on purpose and identify is given a towering choral arrangement courtesy of Jennifer Lucy Cook, with rich harmonies and diverse textures infusing the work, all while keeping the music’s message simple and clear.

When I Grow Up / Naughty (from Matilda) arr. Mac Huff, 3-part mixed with piano
From the musical “Matilda” come two songs that poignantly express the desire for independence and equality: “When I Grow Up” and “Naughty.” These songs capture the magic and whimsy found throughout the musical known for its fun, unconventional, and off-beat style.

You Will Be Found (from Dear Evan Hansen) arr. Mac Huff, TTBB with piano and optional combo
The powerful Act I closer from the Broadway hit musical “Dear Evan Hansen” explores the complexities of social connectivity and our need for respect and love. A perfect choral showcase for pop and concert choirs!
