Ocean Blue by Adrian B. Sims, Grade 2.5
Experience panoramic snapshots of marine life within the ocean through the cinematic lines of “Ocean Blue” by Adrian B. Sims. Oceanic melodies weave throughout deep harmonic structures to create a complex musical work that happens to be extremely playable. A unique way to bring your students out of the band room and into the ocean!

Thawing by Kazuki Shimoda, Grade 2.5
Kazuki Shimoda paints a vivid musical portrait of winter giving way to spring in “Thawing,” a Grade 2.5 work for concert band full of rhythmic vitality and textural nuance. Inspired by the snowy landscapes of northern Japan, this piece uses engaging orchestration, minimalist influences, and expressive percussion writing to reflect the quiet mystery and gradual awakening of the natural world. Winner of the 2024 Barbara Buehlman Prize for Composition, “Thawing” offers developing ensembles a unique opportunity to explore color, contrast, and emotional expression through a beautifully crafted musical narrative.

Pavanne (from American Symphonette No. 2, Movement 2) by Morton Gould/arr. Chris M. Bernotas, Grade 2.5
This expert arrangement of Gould’s famous work captures its jazz style and melodic themes while adapting to intermediate players. Featuring a trumpet solo, it offers opportunities for exploring textures, dynamic contrasts, and valuable teaching moments.

Capriccio Grande by Carol Brittin Chambers, Grade 2.5
Grande is certainly an appropriate term for this new work by Carol Brittin Chambers. Her infectious rhythmic verve is on full display in what is sure to be a new standard in the young band repertoire.

Biofeedback by JaRod Hall, Grade 2.5
This pulse-pounding work by JaRod Hall uses optional synthesizer to create dynamic and sonically versatile textures that will blow your audience away. Highly rhythmic with a subtle pop-inspired groove, “Biofeedback” is a contest-worthy work that breaks barriers and is sure to showcase your entire ensemble without excessive technical demands.

About the Authors:
A former band director, Ken taught grades 5-12 band and music appreciation in both public and parochial schools in Central Ohio, and has been at Stanton’s since 2004. His iPod ranges from jazz and funk to classic and alternative rock, and symphonies. His interests include reading, history, traditional amusement parks, outdoor activities (especially hiking), and watching hockey.

Austin Swack joined the Stanton’s team after a decade of teaching band in Texas public schools, where his ensembles were consistently recognized for superior performance. He is equally at home with beginner and advanced students and has extensive experience programming for ensembles at all ability levels. Additionally, he is a versatile arranger as well as an experienced clinician and adjudicator. In his free time, Austin enjoys running, cycling, and cheering on the Blue Jackets!
