recommended by Jen Sper and Lisa Springer, School Choral Music Specialists

Pop Warm-Ups & Work-Outs for Tenor/Bass by Roger Emerson
Unchanged, changing, or changed tenor/bass singers in middle school and high school may need a little extra help in “finding” their singing voices. Roger Emerson has developed a series of warm-ups that uses excerpts from classic rock and roll tunes that will provide the motivation and repetition they need to do just that. Each song features limited ranges, starting moderately and gradually ascending into the tenor range and descending through the bass range as needed. The professionally-produced audio tracks present each exercise with vocals so your Tenors and Basses have a model to emulate.

Exercises are based on the following songs: Addams Family Theme • Theme from “Jaws” • Jump, Jive An’ Wail • Land of a Thousand Dances • Mission: Impossible Theme • Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye • Shake, Rattle and Roll • Smoke on the Water • We Will Rock You.

Ave Maria attributed to Jacob Arcadelt/arr. Ed Hughes, SAB a cappella
First published in 1842, this admired composition has been carefully arranged for SAB a cappella voices. Based on a 16th century French chanson, it contains the depth of many ages. Still appropriate for the worship service, it is also a valued concert piece, useful for small choirs both young and seasoned.

This Quiet Night (In Stiller Nacht) by Johannes Brahms/arr. Douglas E. Wagner, SAB with piano and optional horn
The exquisite music of Johannes Brahms has been adapted by Douglas E. Wagner to include an English text, piano accompaniment, and optional F Horn. The original German text is also included in the music as a performance option. A wonderful opportunity to introduce your choir to the music of Brahms, either with the more accessible English lyric, or the more challenging original German.

Il est bel et bon by Pierre Passereau/arr. Russell Robinson, SAB a cappella (optional piano)
This Renaissance “fun” piece by Pierre Passereau has always been a choral and audience highlight. Russell Robinson has now made it accessible for SAB voices. The French text is easy, and singers and audiences will “get” the fun meaning of this piece. Both Sides Now: Choral Music from JONI MITCHELL 19 April, 2024

recommended by Jen Sper and Lisa Springer, School Choral Music Specialists

Both Sides Now arr. Roger Emerson, SATB with piano and optional rhythm
Taken in the context of modern cultural offerings of singular musical artistic expression, Joni Mitchell’s 1969 masterpiece stands out as a touchstone of style, lyricism and theme. Roger Emerson, himself carving out a space in the late-’60s southern California rock scene when “Both Sides Now” was written, sets up the Canadian’s inimitable refrains and rhymes in a choral setting in a way that is absolutely astounding.

Big Yellow Taxi arr. Adam & Matt Podd, SATB with piano
This is Joni Mitchell’s call to action to prevent the damage we are doing to the environment. This brilliant arrangement by Matt and Adam Podd unpacks the form and repeats the line “don’t know what you’ve got til it’s gone”. Appropriate for the concert stage and any concert about sustainability, the environment or any time.

River arr. Mac Huff, SATB with piano and optional cello
This classic song by singer/songwriter Joni Mitchell is one of the most recorded ever, by artists of many musical styles. Appropriate for standard concerts or Christmas/Winter concerts, this “concert pop” arrangement is powerful and tender at the same time. The optional cello intensifies the longing and loneliness.

The Circle Game arr. Audrey Snyder, SATB with piano and optional rhythm
Songstress Joni Mitchell is a titan among the music industry, transcending the generations with her melodies and lyrics, infinitely singable the world over. 1966’s “The Circle Game” chronicles the inevitable story of a child becoming an adult – and this Audrey Snyder arrangement is complete with fully transcribed and tuned Guitar and Bass parts.

I Celebrate Myself: Poetic Texts for Choir 15 April, 2024

recommended by Jen Sper and Lisa Springer, School Choral Music Specialists

I Celebrate Myself by Michael John Trotta, SSAA a cappella
This unaccompanied piece contrasts a simple unison motif with quick ostinato in the lower voices. The homophonic refrain clearly declaims, “All forces have been steadily employed to complete and delight me.” After building to a high point with a soaring descant for soprano, the work recedes in intensity with a harmonic restatement of the opening motif. May be performed as part of a collection of four Whitman settings by the composer.

By Night by Elaine Hagenberg, SATB with piano and optional violin, cello & percussion
Harriet Prescott Spofford’s poem describes a young woman who discovers a bold new world of thrilling beauty when she ventures beyond her familiar walls. Accompanied by piano and optional violin, cello, and percussion, this dramatic work depicts the text in epic fashion, alternating between sections of galloping frenetic energy and sedate periods of calm chordal harmony.

To Sit and Dream by Rosephanye Powell, SSAA divisi with piano
“To sit and dream, to sit and read, To sit and learn about the world.” These words from a poem by Langston Hughes invite us to reach toward dreams of a better world and a more just society. The bluesy choral setting will be an excellent selection for treble choirs in high school and up. Originally written for mixed choir, this is now available for treble choir.

The Road Not Taken by Z. Randall Stroope, SATB with piano and cello
Z. Randall Stroope connects: through his teaching, his thoughtful compositions, and the poetry he chooses for his compositions. In his poem “The Road Not Taken,” Robert Frost connects to the core of the human spirit in just a few stanzas using the analogy of a fork in a road. Stroope employs both lush harmonies with simplistic melodic lines, all of which work beautifully to convey Frosts’ intent that there is an inner desire to feel empowered and to create one’s own destiny, to forge a “road not taken,” and ultimately in doing so, to make a difference.

Fire and Ice by Emily Crocker, 3-part treble with piano
This poem by Robert Frost reflects on the end of the world, musings whether it might be consumed in fire or ice, and comparing the two elements with the emotions of desire and hate. The composer’s music captures the contrast of these elements and offers the singers a chance to experience these important musical concepts.

Life Has Loveliness by Greg Gilpin, SATB with piano
Acknowledge and appreciate life’s many gifts with this splendid setting of Sara Teasdale’s poem that reminds us to “spend all you have for loveliness.” A lilting rhythmic flow and some refreshing mixed meter create a lovely, uplifting effect. Greg’s tuneful lines and sensible part writing are satisfying to sing and pave the way to success. Absolutely delightful!

Down the Silver Road by Sarah Quartel, SSAA with piano
“Down the Silver Road” is a comforting and uplifting setting of the poem To F.W. by Edith Franklin Wyatt, which describes the joy of growing old with a companion. It was premiered by the choir of Nazareth College, NY at a concert specifically for individuals living with Alzheimer’s or other dementias and their families and caregivers. Alongside the flowing lyrical melodies, Quartel incorporates a simple vocal part that can be taught to audience members who may be encouraged to join in when it occurs.

Shadow River by Elaine Hagenberg, SSA with piano
This energetic piece for treble voices sweeps listeners into the rapids of Emily Pauline Johnson’s poem entitled “Shadow River.” Bold vocal entrances cascade into bright harmonies as the piano creates an undercurrent of lively folk rhythms. As the river slows, the music floats into an elegant, reflective section, portraying the “shadows and the dreaming.” “Shadow River” will display your treble choir’s vocal and emotional range while taking audiences on a beautiful journey!

And the Night Shall Be Filled with Music by Greg Gilpin, TBB with piano
Gilpin’s inspired music brings Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s text to life. Featuring a cascading a cappella introduction, this reflective work is a marvelous creative programming choice for developing choirs.

Canto que Amabas (The Song You Loved) by Z. Randall Stroope, SSATBB a cappella
This moving selection features a smoothly flowing harmonic texture that courses throughout the piece. Warm and enveloping, “The Song You Loved” will be the song you love singing, whether it be for your mixed choir (unaccompanied) or your treble choir with piano.

I thank You God for most this amazing day by Christopher Aspaas, SATB with piano
Singers and audience alike will thoroughly enjoy Christopher Aspaas’ exquisite setting of e.e. cummings’ poem “i thank You God for most this amazing day,” brought to you by the new Andre J.Thomas Choral Series. The lovely text inspires the composer to reflect on the importance of gratitude and create a celebration of the natural world’s beauty and wonder. Beginning with a prayer of thanks to God for the “most amazing day,” filled with the sights, sounds, and sensations of nature, the speaker describes the “sun on the hill,” the “wind in the trees,” the “warm, white sand,” and the “cool, green sea.” These natural elements are depicted in vivid, sensual detail, inviting the listeners to experience them alongside the performers. Masterfully done. A great selection for graduations, weddings, festivals, and school concerts year-round.

I Wish I Were a Cloud by David Waggoner, 2-part with piano
Take your 2-part choir to new heights with this light and lyrical tune, artfully constructed for treble voices. David Waggoner’s dreamy melody and creative lyrics invite singers to imagine themselves soaring among the clouds. “Let me touch the heavens…roam the mountain…roar like thunder.”

Wind on the Hill by Douglas E. Wagner, 2-part with piano
Winnie the Pooh author A.A. Milne considers the wind through a child’s eyes. We feel its presence and experience its effects, but cannot see it or change its direction. This curious sense of wonder is captured in a delightful musical interpretation for 2-part voices of any age. Elegant in its simplicity.

At the Spring Dawn by Andrea Ramsey, SSAA with marimba (optional piano)
Poet Angelina Weld Grimke was an important figure in the Harlem Renaissance of the 1920s. Here she describes the dawning of a new day, a text captured by the composer in colorful and descriptive writing. Scored for marimba (optional piano) and treble voices, this is a beautiful example of word painting as the choir sings, “it is good to love, it is good to be alive.”

This lovely traditional Japanese song has been given a sensitive treatment by Michael Ryan. This setting provides a marvelous multicultural and creative programming gem for developing choirs. The text of this multicultural feature is a waka (an ancient Japanese poetic form) written by 12th-century ruler Emperor Sutoku. Ruth Morris Gray has created original music that highlights the poem’s depth and explores its theme of separation. Crafted with two minor-key melodies (one sung in Japanese, the other in English) that beautifully intertwine at the pinnacle moment. A pronunciation guide is included in the publication.

Realizing Diversity 15 March, 2024

Realizing Diversity: An Equity Framework for Music Education by Karen Howard
Questions abound about diversity in music education. How can we engage with diverse populations, repertoire, and identities while upholding integrity and achieving equity? What are cultural appropriation, othering, tokenizing, and essentializing? How can we avoid bias in our teaching and repertoire selection? How do we create a more socially just music education?

These are critical questions with accessible answers. But if we are to become better music educators, we must reflect on these questions, our own identities, and our relationships with the music and people of the world.

“Realizing Diversity” by Karen Howard is a groundbreaking and practical resource for crafting diverse and anti-bias music education in classrooms, ensembles, and studios at all levels—from preschool to university and community settings.

At the book’s core is an Anti-Bias Framework intended to help music educators gain confidence and comfort in designing music curricula that are just, equitable, and make participants feel safe and welcome. Structured around the four social justice domains of identity, diversity, justice, and action, this framework explores topics of anti-racism, gender and sexual identity, power and privilege, disabilities, economic realities, empathy, and critical consciousness.

Dr. Howard also includes discussion of educational movements in United States history, the challenging “world music” label and related authenticity, the hyper-prevalence of Western Eurocentric music, inclusive repertoire selection, as well as appendices with critical practices for educators and a sample curriculum.

An indispensable book for pre-service, beginning, and veteran music teachers of toddlers through adults, “Realizing Diversity” considers the many separate but deeply interrelated questions related to creating a more socially just music education.

Weather: Stand the Storm 13 March, 2024

Weather: Stand the Storm by Rollo Dilworth, SATB divisi, Speaker(s) and Wind Ensemble or piano
Historically, the arts have always fulfilled the dual roles of responding to change while at the same time creating change. “Weather” is a poem that gives voice to the voiceless, especially those who have been and continue to be marginalized because of difference. It responds to and reflects realities that are both culturally specific and humanly universal. Professor Claudia Rankine challenges all of us (no matter our background or lived experience) to know better, to do better, to take action, and to become agents of social justice and social change.

This work for choir, narrator, and piano with optional Wind Symphony or Chamber Ensemble, is to be a learning and growing experience for the singers, the audience, and the conductor/teacher in all ways emotional and intellectual . There is a companion resource for “Weather” intended for students, educators, conductors, and audiences to learn more about the social, political, and historical context of this work. This guide offers an opportunity for everyone to deeply engage with “Weather” and understand its critically important social and historical context. The guide, created by Dr. Colleen Sears, Professor of Music at The College of New Jersey, encourages us to honor the intent of Claudia Rankine’s poetry and Rollo Dilworth’s music; to become better citizens in our communities and to bridge divides through our shared humanity.

The fast-paced, rhythmic call and response energizes choirs and inspires audiences. Encouraging listeners to take a stand for what is right, this piece is ideal for church and for social justice and equality events.

Down in the River to Pray arr. Jace Wittig, SATB a cappella with body percussion
The video of the Colorado All-State Treble Choir singing this piece from the balconies in a hotel lobby has gone viral for good reason! This a cappella arrangement of the folk hymn made popular in the movie “O Brother, Where Art Thou?” utilizes effective body percussion, compelling harmonies and an authentic vocal style to create an unforgettable choral piece.

Bring Me Little Water, Sylvie arr. Robert Jones, TTB a cappella with string bass
This down-to-earth setting has already blanketed every other voicing – now comes the TTB version. Professor Sharon Gratto has built a career around providing historical context to multicultural and folk music. A simple three-part choir accompanied by a stand-up bass gives an authentic American homespun quality to the work. Truly fun to sing, this arrangement sounds just right – just the way this song should always be sung.

All Night, All Day (with My Lord, What a Morning) arr. Russell Robinson, 3-part mixed with piano
This delightful partnering of two familiar African-American Spirituals in a rhythmic, jazzy style is both easy to teach and fun for your young singers. Both songs are introduced in unison in this arrangement that builds in intensity and ends with a strong, bright finish.

Shady Grove arr. Cristi Cary Miller, 3-part mixed with piano and optional fiddle
Teaching opportunities abound in this irresistible setting of a traditional American folk tune. The modal melody is in pentatonic, easy ostinato-like countermelodies make the part-singing a snap, and there is even a fun body percussion section. Perform it with live fiddle or with the digital audio for a sensational concert showcase!

Shenandoah arr. Roger Emerson, SAB with piano
Using rich, lush contemporary harmonies often found in pop and jazz settings and featuring voices that are often relegated to harmony this new setting of the familiar chanty is a joy to sing.

And We Shall Sail (with The Water Is Wide) arr. Glenda E. Franklin, 2-part with piano and optional flute
An original melody paired with the Scottish folk song “The Water Is Wide” creates a gently flowing choral for 2-part voices with optional flute. The original words speak of sailing to places unknown, sails filled with a gentle breeze and a winding river filled with adventures yet unknown. A fresh take on a well-loved melody creating a beautiful ballad for young voices to learn and experience.

Freedom’s Plow arr. Joseph Joubert, SATB with piano
Poet Langston Hughes writes “A long time ago, an enslaved people heading toward freedom made up a song: Keep Your Hand on the Plow! Hold On! The plow plowed a new furrow across the field of history. Into that furrow, the freedom seed was dropped. From that seed a tree grew, is growing, will ever grow. That tree is for you, and me and everybody.” This is for an advanced choir with an accomplished accompanist.

Hold On arr. Dan Davison, TB with piano and optional percussion

May Wind, Set Me Free: Creative Spring Programming for High School Choirs 15 February, 2024

recommended by Jen Sper and Lisa Springer, School Choral Music Specialists

May Wind (Set Me Free) by Jacob Narverud, SATB with piano
Narverud’s setting of this evocative Sara Teasdale poem tells a story about how experiencing nature and music can inspire deep love and happiness. Soaring vocal lines combined with rich, dissonant harmonies and a rocking piano accompaniment make this a powerful piece that will resonate with choirs of all ages. The duple-against-triple patterns represent the conflict between Love and Stubbornness, which ultimately ends with the triplet pattern (Stubbornness) surrendering to Love (duple pattern) for a beautiful, empowering ending – “Love: Set Me Free!”

Time by Jennifer Lucy Cook, SATB a cappella
The line between time’s reality and its invention is blurry. In this new piece, the lyrics disappear and phrases take on new meaning. We lose time when we try to keep it, we spend time as we try to save it. Time insists upon eluding us, we can only notice the fact that time has been wining at us all along. This music is a way of winking back.

Every Given Light by Dominick DiOrio, SSA with piano
“This is the day when every given light bears forth like a star.” A hopeful and inspirational message set to a rhythmic melody with a moving piano accompaniment. Ranging from unison to four parts, this is a charming sentiment for children’s choirs and developing treble ensembles.

Falling Star by Glenda E. Franklin, SSA with piano and optional flute
Sara Teasdale’s poem “The Falling Star” is blended with lines from childhood rhymes like “Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star” and “Star Light, Star Bright” in a creative pairing of celestial texts. A minor key brings a mysterious feel, and the lyrical lines are enhanced with a flowing, delicate piano accompaniment and optional flute obbligato.

Little Alleluia by Grace O’Duffy, SATB a cappella
This is a rhythmic choral miniature, composed for the Chamber Choir Ireland Choral Postcards project. It opens with a sparkling soprano motif, joined quickly by the other treble voices in rhythmic and fragmented repetition of the world “alleluia.” The music alternates between 10/8 and 7/8, maintaining a feeling of spontaneity and exuberance.
