all the way home sarah quartelAll the Way Home by Sarah Quartel, SSA with piano
This work for upper voices with a text by the composer was inspired by members of the Radcliffe Ladies’ Choir and their motto “friendship through singing.” The lilting vocal lines are subtly underpinned by a delicate piano accompaniment, and the opening performance direction, ‘contentedly rocking’, describes the overall nature of the piece: peaceful, content, and easy-going.

In Meeting We Are Blessed by Troy Robertson, SSA a cappella with djembe
With an original text inspired by John Donne, this piece illustrates the power of peace, and all the blessings found in a peaceful world. Originally for mixed voices, this new voicing is a welcome addition to the repertoire for treble voices. The lovely, lilting melody will appeal to choirs of all ages.

never one thing may erlewine corie brownNever One Thing by May Erlewine/arr. Corie Brown, SSA with piano, cajon & body percussion
This is an anthem for women’s choirs and singers who have ever felt parts of themselves disowned or ostracized. Singer, conductor, and audience are invited to begin the process of reclaiming and healing those parts of themselves that are, at the same time, both vulnerable and powerful. This music is simple and folk-like with optional body percussion.

I’m On My Way arr. Anthony Trecek-King, SSA with piano
Rhythmic, driving, and intense, “I’m On My Way” is a rich selection for three-part treble choruses. A lesser-known spiritual speaking to themes of home, journey, and trial. Don’t miss this accessible and dynamic arrangement.

O Sing to the Lord by Dan Davison, SSAA with 4-hand piano
An SSAA/four-hand piano version of Davison’s original “O Sing to the Lord.” A strong yet accessible concert opener. Multi-rhythms enhance the excitement of this majestic concert or festival selection. Can also be performed with a downloadable two-hand piano score.

soy un coya chiquitito r eben trobaughSoy un Coya Chiquitito arr. R. Eben Trobaugh, 2-part with piano

Sound the Celebration! Programmatic Music for Young Orchestra 27 March, 2020

spring fever kathryn griesingerrecommended by Dan C. and Megan W., Orchestra Specialists

Spring Fever by Kathryn Griesinger, Grade 1
A fun, 50s-style rock piece for beginning string players! This easy, up-beat tune only uses notes from the D and G Major scales with just a few open E strings in violin. Add optional drum set for a real dance party beat. The perfect finale for a first-year spring concert!
TEACH • rhythmic independence, pickups on beat 4, dynamics
ORCHESTRATION • fully scored – add drumset for a 60s rock feel
PERFORMANCE • show off your beginners at their spring concert

Falconer by Doug Spata, Grade 2
Perfect for late-beginner and early-intermediate orchestras, this work features simple eighth-note ostinatos; dramatic melodies; and a bold, cinematic sound. Rhythmic independence is limited, and the notes can all be played on the D and A strings (G string for the basses). But the piece retains a mature style that students will love.
TEACH • staccato, pairing up for melodies, dynamic extremes
ORCHESTRATION • melodic content generously shared together
PERFORMANCE • getting it up to 170 will get folks to take notice

sound the celebration deborah baker mondaySound the Celebration by Deborah Baker Monday, Grade 2
Set in ABA form, with a brief “Andante e legato” middle section, the A section is truly a bright fanfare which makes for a fantastic concert opener. It’s in D Major with some C naturals thrown in for extra color.
TEACH • F & C natural in D major, necessity of bow position/speed
ORCHESTRATION • most, but not all, of the action in upper strings
PERFORMANCE • exhilarating spirit provides concert inspiration

Perpetuum by Paul Barker, Grade 2.5
“Perpetuum” is a lively and contemporary addition to any concert performance with its memorable melodic lines and relentless driving rhythms. The piece begins with a powerful introduction to the main theme which is ingeniously augmented as the piece powers forward. The middle section provides a warm, lyrical contrast performed by the lower strings. The main theme returns with a wall of sound heading to a dramatic close. This beautifully expressive and contemporary work is a nice change of pace for orchestra students. Using the optional percussion parts are highly recommended for optimal effect.
TEACH • rhythmic combinations in 6/8, rest on beat 1, D minor
ORCHESTRATION • add effective tambourine, cymbals, bass drum
PERFORMANCE • dramatic, expressive, 6/8 extravaganza

cold fusion peter terryCold Fusion by Peter Terry, Grade 2.5
“Cold Fusion” is a dramatic piece for string orchestra which alternates between a syncopated fanfare and a bold, yet lyrical theme. These contrasting ideas chase each other throughout the piece and their basic nature should be emphasized. The syncopated figure rarely goes away altogether and should be felt under the lyrical theme when they appear together, without becoming too prominent. Performers should pay particular attention to the places where this rhythm blossoms into a restatement of the fanfare to bring this connection out. Reserve enough energy for a big ending. In particular, allow the piece to build into the biggest moment from m. 103 to the end. The title alludes to the idea of a massive amount of energy being unleashed through fairly simple means.
TEACH • A natural minor, syncopation, solid, yet off-kilter pulse
ORCHESTRATION • all parts needed for a thrusting, unified whole
PERFORMANCE • dramatic, energetic and forward propelling

Ignite by Kathryn Griesinger, Grade 2.5
Feel the intensity and fire of an exciting adventure in this electric work for string orchestra. Written in A minor, the musical journey takes players through a series of unexpected modal shifts using easy accidentals, edgy syncopation, and accented rhythms to maintain a sense of danger and momentum. This work of daring escape explodes with energy, keeping players and audiences on the edge of their seats.
TEACH • A minor with modal shifts, edgy syncopation, extra beats
ORCHESTRATION • very active parts for all orchestra sections
PERFORMANCE • this one will light a fire under your audience

dance of the red dragons michael hopkinsDance of the Red Dragons by Michael Hopkins, Grade 2.5
This energetic and beautiful original work is a lively 2/4 meter piece set in the keys of G major and E minor. All sections pass around the melody while energetic rhythms highlight the countermelody and accompaniment parts. This great festival or concert closer will make your orchestra sound rich and mature.
TEACH • offbeat accents, keeping melody above active accompaniment
ORCHESTRATION • every section gets the melody at some point
PERFORMANCE • a young string group will sound rich and mature

Middle school can be a difficult time in the life of a student. Often they feel inadequate and they carry self-doubt. Composer Jim Papoulis explored this topic with the middle school students in a song writing workshop and the students discovered that they are not alone with their feelings of self-doubt and that even adults struggle with these feelings. These students also discovered that they have the ability to be strong and find inspiration from within. The music reflects these moments of discovery with rhythmic forces. There is a vulnerable honesty in this music, an honesty that young people will resonate with.

Two of the most delightful songs from Lerner and Loewe’s much-revered musical “My Fair Lady” are combined into this 2½-minute medley designed for women’s ensembles of any age. A grandiose introduction gives way to the breathless energy of Eliza and Henry’s first dance in “I Could Have Danced All Night,” followed by a playful setting of “Wouldn’t It Be Loverly.” The melodies and harmonies are distributed beautifully across all three voices, encouraging all of your ladies to channel their inner Julie Andrews.

Singin’ the 70s! arr. Paul Langford, SSA with piano & optional rhythm
Capturing the sound of the 1970s, this medley will be a sure-fire hit for your next concert or show. Covering styles from disco to light gospel, your singers will groove to these beats and love experiencing these iconic tunes. Available for mixed, women’s and men’s voices with a super hot track! Songs include: “Best of My Love,” “I Feel the Earth Move,” “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough.”

Plan for upcoming concerts with these new options, perfect for springtime performances!

An April Morning by Bruce W. Tippette, SATB with piano
Bruce W. Tippette takes the words of Sara Teasdale’s poem “Morning” and beautifully sets them for SATB voices with an expressive, yet supportive piano accompaniment. The use of overlapping vocal lines, coupled with tonal clusters, give each part importance while creating harmonic delight. This is a great piece for intermediate high school and even some advanced middle schools.

breeze and the birdsong amy f. bernonThe Breeze and the Birdsong by Amy F. Bernon, 2-part with piano
This song is dedicated to a dear friend who is about to start a new chapter of life. It’s full of descriptions of nature and fresh adventures: “May the bright, sparkling day stay beside you now as you’re on your way.” Bernon’s delightful original also makes for a memorable and meaningful graduation selection for young singers who are moving up to middle or high school and experiencing important transitions of their own. A Learning Resource Page is included.

winter's defeat charles mccarthaWinter’s Defeat by Gwyn Williams/arr. Charles McCartha, SAB with piano and optional flute & hand drum
The optional lilting flute and rhythmic hand drum parts lend a festive air to this song that celebrates the end of winter. Robust choral singing throughout beckons a change of season, and a soaring descant at the end signals the triumphant return of spring. A fully developed piece for winter and spring programs.
