Harp Features for String Orchestra 31 October, 2022

recommended by Maureen Driscoll and Megan W., Orchestra Specialists

Mulholland Elegy by Doug Spata, Grade 3.5
Named after the dark, twisting road that winds through the Hollywood hills, this homage to film noir unfolds like a mystery in the shadowy, stylized world of 1940s Los Angeles. The sweeping and expressive style offers students experience with advanced musicianship skills as well as required shifting and increased part independence. An optional harp part adds to the melodramatic style, making this an ideal contrasting piece in a contest or concert program.

Silent Night arr. Jeremy S. Martin, Grade 3.5
Franz Gruber’s “Silent Night” arranged by Jeremy Martin brings delicate warmth and peace to the holiday season. After a few years of gentle prodding by Lynne Latham to write a string arrangement for the Latham Music catalog, Martin completed this work in 2021. After Lynne passed away unexpectedly in early 2022, Martin dedicated the arrangement to her memory. No eyes will be dry after hearing this lovely rendition, which includes legato lines, harmonic depth, a short solo violin I and II part, and shifting for all voices. Subtle tempo changes will further capture the attention of the audience. “Silent Night” is a must-have for your level 3.5 holiday library and will be requested every year.

Blue Hook by Bud Woodruff, Medium Advanced
“Blue Hook” will stimulate the imaginations of the players and audiences alike. As the music drives through modes, students are “practicing” their hooked bows without realizing they are working. “Blue Hook” includes an optional harp part which adds color to the overall orchestral sound. Between hooked bowings, modal scales, shifting for first violins into fifth position, small shifts for other instruments through fourth position, the students will enjoy creating their own story of what “Blue Hook” is about as they learn or develop the concepts of the piece. Your orchestra will ask to play this piece over and over.

A Christmas Carol by Randall Standridge, Grade 2.5
Charles Dickens’s “A Christmas Carol” is brought to life in this engaging attacca suite by composer Randall Standridge. A narrator guides the audience through the story of Ebenezer Scrooge as he encounters Marley’s ghost, meets the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Christmas Yet to Come, before finally arriving at a moment of joy and triumph on Christmas morning. Sure to be a new perennial holiday favorite for performers and audiences alike!

Christmas Exhilaration by Sean O’Loughlin, Grade 3.5
A quick and to-the-point fanfare for your next holiday concert. It has hints of various popular carols wrapped in an energy infused fanfare in triple meter. Lots of poignant biting harmonies in the brass that leads to a satisfying conclusion.

A Christmas Tiding by Tyler Arcari, Grade 4
A roaring combination of “’Twas in the Moon of Wintertime” and “God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen.” After a subtle lush opening the piece is off and running in a fantastic 7/8 groove that is bold and aggressive. It is well-scored and will make your symphonic band sound outstanding.

December Joy arr. Douglas E. Wagner, Grade 3
Arranged by Douglas E. Wagner, three well-known secular carol tunes are showcased in this big and brassy, bright and flashy seasonal extravaganza, especially suited as a concert opener. Beginning with a cascade of chimes, soaring woodwind runs, and bold brass lines, “Deck the Hall” and “Here We Come A-Caroling” are presented with dynamic flair, interspersed with brief fanfare-like episodes. The mood transitions to a jaunting sleigh ride across the winter landscape, partnering the second time through with “Jingle Bells,” as the spirited celebration closes with a short coda, drawn from musical materials heard in the opening measures of the work.

Joy Through the Holidays by Robert W. Smith, Grade 1
“Joy Through The Holidays” is a joyous opening statement for your holiday concert! Drawing upon classic favorites, this arrangement by Robert W. Smith is carefully scored to make your young musicians sound brilliant. A perfect proclamation to begin the season of celebration and joy!

Fanfare for the Festival of Lights by Evan VanDoren, Grade 3.5
“Fanfare for the Festival of Lights” weaves two traditional Hanukkah melodies, “Ma’oz Tzur” and “The Dreidel Song” into a colorful, rousing celebration! Evan VanDoren has masterfully crafted an approachable, mature-sounding composition that will challenge your best performers while meeting the needs of your developing players. Get your next holiday concert started with energy and excitement!

Hanukkah Dances arr. Katie O’Hara LaBrie, Grade 2
Liven up your holiday concert with a medley of four familiar Hanukkah tunes (“Hanukkah, Hanukkah,” “Sivivon,” “Dreidel,” and “Maoz Tzur”) in “Hanukkah Dances,” arranged by Katie O’Hara LaBrie. All students have melodic opportunities equally in this spirited arrangement that is perfect for any level. Students and audiences alike will love hearing familiar melodies introduced and then intertwined among all the voices of the band.

Noche de Paz arr. Brian Bankston, Grade 2
A creative reimagining of the classic carol “Silent Night” in the relaxing Brazilian style of Bossa Nova. Warm and mellow harmonies, deceptive chord movements and Latin percussion provide an excellent education in ethnic rhythms and sounds. Broaden your band’s diversity with this tranquil arrangement of a Christmas classic.

Santa the Barbarian and the Pirates of the North Pole by Randall Standridge, Grade 2
This feisty and festive holiday work finds our titular anti-hero taking to the seas to spread his brand of holiday mayhem. Written in a jaunty 3/4 time, Chapter 2 of the “Santa the Barbarian Saga” evokes both yuletide cheer and danger on the high seas as our jolly old elf and his pirates pillage, plunder, and bring the spirit of the season to anyone unlucky enough to cross their paths. Incorporating numerous familiar tunes (Jolly Old St. Nicholas, I Saw Three Ships, Ukrainian Bell Carol, and more) into the style of seas chanties, this work for Narrator and Concert Band is sure to be the talk of your next winter concert! Rated ARRRRRRGH!

Wexford Carol arr. Rob Romeyn, Grade 3
The “Wexford Carol” is a traditional Irish carol dating back to the 12th century. This wonderful arrangement begins with a solo piccolo (or flute) amidst a transparent harmonic setting. Melody is then presented by various sections of the band amid lush harmonies as the music develops. Changing styles and textures keep the interest level high, before building to a powerful full climax. From here, the music ends as it began, with the solo piccolo leading to a sensitive and heartfelt conclusion.

Winter Festival by Matthew Donnelly, Grade 3.5
“Winter Festival” is a musical description of a group of children sliding down snow cover hills on toboggans and sleds. In the cold winter months in Canada, there was no better way to spend a winter Saturday than getting outside and enjoying all that the north had to offer. Brilliant scales and rhythmic parts for all make this an excellent opener on a winter concert.

Wintertide by Randall Standridge, Grade 2
Winter is a truly magical season. The white snow, the long nights, the holiday lights, the festivals…it truly feels like no other time of the year. Join Composer Randall Standridge on this new wintertime journey!

Snow Is Silent: For Advanced Choir 21 October, 2022

recommended by Jen Sper and Lora Moore, School Choral Music Specialists

Snow Is Silent by Jenny Mahler, SATB a cappella with conga and body percussion
An energetic piece setting a text full of natural imagery. Mahler’s catchy melodies are combined with speech, body percussion, and congas to imitate the contrasting characteristics of rain. Dramatic and expressive – this is the perfect performance piece to get stuck into!

Es ist ein Ros’ entsprungen arr. John Rutter, SSAATTBB a cappella with oboe
John Rutter creates a peaceful and contemplative atmosphere in this new arrangement of the traditional German carol, “Es ist ein’ Ros’ entsprungen.” The piece opens with a lyrical melody from the solo oboe, over a wash of gentle, hummed vocal harmonies. Rutter continues the carol by underpinning the vocal melodies with ‘ah’s and hummed parts, and keeping the dynamics soft, to retain its tranquility.

Long Ago (In the Bleak Midwinter) arr. Jacob Narverud, SATB with piano and optional string quartet
This haunting setting of Holst’s timeless melody will be the highlight of your next Holiday concert. Rossetti’s famous poem soars off the page in Narverud’s nostalgic new arrangement for accompanied mixed choir, which features each section of the ensemble as well as the pianist.

Blow, blow, thou winter wind by Sarah Quartel, SATB with piano
This atmospheric setting of familiar words from Shakespeare’s “As You Like It” is sprightly and uplifting, with singers being asked by the composer to perform with “a bit of frost and a knowing smile.”

On this Silent Night by Sarah Quartel, SATB with piano
“On this silent night” perfectly conveys the magic and excitement of winter, conjuring images of warmth by the fireside while the weather outside closes in and giving a subtle nod to Franz Gruber’s “Silent night.” The vivid imagery of the secular text is enhanced through gleaming harmonies and glittering quaver movement in the piano accompaniment. Hemiolas give the piece a dance-like quality, while a contrasting middle section uses darker sonorities and textures to reflect the storm outside.

Hark! The Herald Angels Sing arr. Josh Sparkman, SATB with piano
This joyful new mixed-meter arrangement of “Hark! The Herald Angels Sing” is the perfect winter concert opener or closer. Scored for mixed choir with piano accompaniment, all parts are accessible, rhythmic, and exciting. Sparkman’s stunning, slower middle section brings contrast and warmth to Mendelssohn’s melody, and the exuberant ending will leave your audience in awe.

I will light candles this Christmas by Kim André Arnesen, SSAA with piano and optional orchestra
Featured at the 2018 St. Olaf College Christmas Festival, this is a beautiful and lush setting of the Howard Thurman text. It reminds us that Christmas is a time of light over darkness. The message in the carol inspires us to become carriers of a light that brings joy, hope, courage, peace, grace, and love.

This endris night by Sarah Quartel, TTBB a cappella with handbells
Sarah Quartel brings a fresh take on a familiar fifteenth-century text in this enchanting carol. The dialogue between Mary and the infant Jesus is woven to a beguiling folk-like melody, in 6/8 metre, through each of the voice parts, with each verse ending in the lilting refrain “Lully, by by, lullay.”

Exhilaration: Programmatic Titles for Orchestra 18 October, 2022

recommended by Eric Stratton and Megan W., Orchestra Specialists

Exhilaration by Cooper Ford, Grade 1
Many special experiences are joyful or thrilling, such as flying for the first time, a big sports moment, or the excitement of a first concert. Whatever it might be, Cooper Ford’s “Exhilaration” is a musical expression of the emotions that come from these memorable moments. Young musicians should find this both easily accessible and fun to play, as melodies are passed around to different sections while reinforcing foundational rhythms, notes within a D major scale, and playing with a big sound. Written with the young orchestra in mind, 2nd violin and viola parts are doubled, as well as cello and string bass.

Grand Pursuit by Michael Kamuf, Grade 2
Written to reinforce dotted quarter/eighth note patterns, “Grand Pursuit” by Michael Kamuf features contrasting melodies, bold harmonies, and a fun, groove-oriented development section that combine to create a piece both your students and audiences will enjoy.

Shadow Defenders by Katie O’Hara LaBrie, Grade 3
From the first note of this thrilling piece, a sense of suspense feeds an intense desire to protect and avenge, leaving listeners to wonder what is looming around the corner. Let students imagine a world of possibilities in this cinematic work, while developing their skills with independent rhythms, shifting, and interlaced syncopations that propel this journey through the shadows.

Mustang Triumph by Sarah Siegler, Grade 3
“Mustang Triumph” portrays a herd of wild mustangs galloping through the plains. Great for showing off the full tutti sound of your Orchestra!

Galaxy Jam by Caryn Wiegand Neidhold, Grade 1.5
Jam among the stars with “Galaxy Jam,” an inventive rock take on “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star” in E minor. The jam section encourages your students to be creative with instrument percussion improv and solos with suggested notes.

Artifacts by Kathryn Griesinger, Grade 1
This mysterious hunt for ancient artifacts reveals important pedagogical concepts, including staccato, accents, bow-lifts, pizzicato, dynamics, and 4th finger. Written in B minor with optional piano, violin 2 doubles viola and cello doubles bass for a full sound with only a little third position shifting in the bass. A skill-building concert selection!

Momentous by Brian Balmages, Grade 0.5-2
So many performance options and combinations! Equally suited as an opener or closer, this “Baroque-meets-contemporary” festival-style work has exceptional performance flexibility as a multi-level OR single-level work! Play it entirely as a grade 2 or play it as a grade 1. Additionally, both may be combined, and directors can add the grade ½ parts, which are based on open strings and limited first finger. Innovative and exciting!

Island Rhythms by Erica Donahoe/arr. J. Cameron Law, Grade 2
Imagine the easy feeling of a day at the beach, happily soaking in the sunshine! This delightful original piece uses rhythmic syncopations, percussion, and harmonies that evoke the feel of the different traditions found in the Caribbean islands. The happy and carefree opening theme takes a brief turn through the parallel minor partway through the piece – perhaps a tropical storm or shark-infested waters! The major key soon returns to take us back to our carefree day. Encourage students to emphasize the syncopations and rhythms that create this distinct sound, or they can try their hand at one of the percussion parts!

A Mission to Mars by Jeffery Frizzi, Grade 2
A great fast-paced and aggressive work for the string ensemble presented in three sections full of drama and intrigue. Driving rhythmic features will keep your musicians engaged and ready to play this one over and over.

Sunday Afternoon by R. Scott Whittington, Grade 2
A whimsical piece that appeals to all ages. Its bouncy rhythms and upbeat melodies evoke the feeling of wind rushing through our hair or the laughter of family members as games are played and memories are shared. The piece is targeted at advancing junior and intermediate string ensembles and works for young and mature players alike. One of the charms of this piece is the constant tug-of-war between triplets and the straight eighth notes. With its lilting, infectious themes, the work is spirited, fun to play, and will be a favorite with audiences and players alike.
