for Treble Ensembles
Threads of Joy
by Dale Trumbore, SSAA a cappella
This song of happiness and celebration of the human experience is set in a minor key. The harmonic language acknowledges that we can’t have joy without recognizing its opposite. The undertones point out that this is not just an exultation of happiness but also suggests how we emerge from darkness and pain back into light. The music captures this duality in ever-shifting prismatic harmonies.

Lullaby by Matthew Emery, SSAA a cappella
This musical setting of the Dekker poem employs a warm, lush harmonic language along with a lovely, lyrical treatment of this familiar bedtime poem. Commissioned and premiered by the NW ACDA Women’s Honor Choir, this is a wonderfu addition to serious treble literature.

Singabahambayo arr. Victor C. Johnson, SSA a cappella with percussion
Fun to sing and surprisingly rehearsal-friendly, this South African musical celebration of freedom and hope is sure to have instant appeal. Lending itself to simple stage choreography and with an exciting, driving beat throughout, it will enthrall choirs and audiences alike.

for Tenor/Bass Ensembles
In Dreams
by Zebulon Highben, TTBB a cappella
This beautiful setting of a Rossetti text is a true gem for a tenor-bass choir. Three verses in length, framed with doo-doo-doo vocables, this a cappella work has much to offer to a mature ensemble.

ad astra to the stars jacob narverud

Ad Astra (To the Stars…) by Jacob Narverud, TBB with piano
With a pulsating and highly rhythmic piano accompaniment, composer Narverud’s “Ad Astra” radiates energy. Filled with hope and empowerment, the text reads, “To the stars through difficulties, look upward, move forward, leave all cares behind.” “Ad Astra” is an impressive, yet accessible piece for developing or advanced choirs alike.

Festival Pieces for String Orchestra 24 January, 2022

recommended by Megan W., Orchestra Specialist

Electric Sinfonia by Lauren Bernofsky, Grade 0.5-2.5
This festival arrangement of “Electric Sinfonia” allows students from your entire strings program to play together! The set includes the required grade 2.5 parts along with easier grade 1 parts and a very easy grade 0.5 level, which uses only pizzicato. In a modal A minor, the piece has hints of rock music and a white-hot intensity that runs through the entire work. Perfect for building confidence – the individual parts are quite easy to play, but all together as a group…sensational!

A Festival Rondo by Richard Meyer, Grade 1.5-3.5
This work features all of your school district’s string orchestras at once and was written to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the Freeport, Illinois orchestra program. The piece combines elementary, middle school, and high school string orchestras each playing age-appropriate material, making for the perfect closer to an “All-City,” multi-level concert. During the course of this energetic rondo, each group is featured on their own melody. As the piece unfolds, the melodies are creatively combined, keeping all the players “on their toes” and active at all times. Grade levels for the three groups are: Elementary – Grade 1.5; Middle school – Grade 2.5; High school – Grade 3.5.

Greater Than by Brian Balmages, Grade 1-3.5
Commissioned by the National String Project Consortium, this gorgeous lyrical work can be performed alone as an intermediate level piece, or with multi-level supplemental parts (available separately) for beginning and developing string students. Orchestrated to celebrate inclusion and diversity, the multi-level option is designed to sound far “greater than” the intermediate version alone. Not your traditional festival orchestra piece by any means.

stand up harriet roger emerson

recommended by Jen Sper and Lora Moore, School Choral Music Specialists

FOR HIGH SCHOOL CHOIR
Stand Up (from Harriet) arr. Roger Emerson, SATB a cappella with body percussion
From the 2019 film “Harriet,” based on the life of abolitionist Harriet Tubman, this Roger Emerson a cappella choral arrangement captures what made the original track so memorable: a raw and slow-burning sense of overcoming obstacles.

Found/Tonight arr. Jacob Narverud, SATB with piano and optional string quartet
“Dear Evan Hansen.” “Hamilton.” Lin-Manuel Miranda. Ben Platt. Pasek and Paul. What more can be said? This incredible mash-up combines hits from two smash Broadway musicals, written by contemporary powerhouse composers of stage and screen. You’ve sung “You Will Be Found,” and you know “The Story of Tonight;” now perform them together in an emotional arrangement that shares a message of hope and encouragement.

get ready ain't too proud roger emerson

Get Ready (from Ain’t Too Proud) arr. Roger Emerson, SATB with piano and optional combo
Significant for being the last Motown song written by Smokey Robinson for The Temptations, “Get Ready” is featured in the Broadway musical “Ain’t Too Proud,” which chronicles the life of the award-winning group. Featuring the unmistakable Motown sound, this is a surefire crowd-pleaser!

Helpless (from Hamilton) arr. Lisa DeSpain, SATB with piano
Attention all Hamilfans! This act one favorite recounts the correspondence, courtship, and romance between Alexander Hamilton and Eliza Schuyler. The blended pop/R&B style shines brightly in this choral setting that allows entire sections to perform those half-rapped, half-sung phrases that made the musical so famous. A couple of brief solos are easy to assign, with more character than range required. Fun fact: repetitive “I do’s” foreshadow the wedding to come.

it's all right robert t. gibson

FOR MIDDLE SCHOOL CHOIR
It’s All Right
arr. Robert T. Gibson, 2-part/SSA with piano
Jon Batiste’s cover for Pixar’s “Soul” brings this feel-good Curtis Mayfield song to a whole new generation. Built on a soulful groove, jazzy twists, and an upbeat vibe, it’s everywhere! First made famous by The Impressions, a 60s group of which Mayfield was a member, this happy hit has stood the test of time, recorded by many diverse artists over the years. The arranger adds his own authentic touch with some gospel inflections and interjections. “It’s all right, have a good time, ’cause it’s all right!”

Born to Be Brave arr. Mac Huff, 2-part with piano and optional rhythm
Although the name of the television show is a mouthful (“High School Musical: The Musical: The Series”), this song from the show contains a message that is simple and succinct. Empowering text provides a blueprint for your singers to lead listeners away from ignorance and fear.

We’re All In This Together arr. Mac Huff, 2-part with piano
This hit song from “High School Musical” appears five times in the spin-off series, “High School Musical: The Musical: The Series.” It speaks poignantly to creating a culture of unity and common ground. A joyful dance beat and driving rhythms highlight the call for solidarity and celebration.

back to before lisa despain

FOR TREBLE CHOIR
Back to Before (from Ragtime)
arr. Lisa DeSpain, SSA with piano
An epic ballad from Broadway’s “Ragtime,” a true masterwork of 20th-century musical theater. Exploring themes of identity, personal and societal change, and inner resilience, Lisa DeSpain’s arrangement makes adept use of women’s voices from start to finish, creating an unforgettable emotional and musical journey for both singer and listener.

When You Believe (from The Prince of Egypt) arr. John Leavitt, SSA with piano and optional strings & percussion
Stephen Schwartz’s “When You Believe” won the Academy Award for Best Song in 1999, and John Leavitt gives his signature, dignified touch to his arrangement, adding strings and percussion to moving effect. The Hebrew prayer in the middle section of the piece is a great opportunity for cultural exploration.

Stand Up (from Harriet) arr. Téa Douglas, SSAA a cappella with body percussion
The Douglas family, inspiring us all to do good and love someone (DGLS), have recorded this extremely powerful arrangement of the 2020 Oscar-winning Best Original Song from “Harriet.” Premiered at the 2021 ACDA Virtual National Conference, this rendition cuts straight through to the heart.

Hamilton Women arr. Lisa DeSpain, SSA with piano
This fast-paced mini-medley (only 4.5 minutes in length) pays homage to the strong female characters in Lin-Maunuel Miranda’s Hamilton! The powerful arrangement includes a few opportunities to showcase outstanding soloists and more than enough SSA writing for all of your singers to shine! Titles include: “Satisfied,” “Burn,” “Helpless,” and “The Schuyler Sisters.”

FOR TENOR/BASS CHOIR
Proud of Your Boy (from Aladdin)
arr. Jonathan Palant, TBB with piano
From the Broadway production of “Aladdin” here is a song about self worth and the desire to do the right thing. Wonderful lyrics for young men to sing. With a beautiful and singable melody by Alan Menken this is an arrangement that will move your young men’s choir forward and to the next level of proficiency with excellent teaching strategies included in the page 2 notes.

Hamilton Men arr. Lisa DeSpain, TTB with piano
By turns stirring, sentimental, and hilarious, this dynamic 4-minute medley lets your changed-voice singers explore the many emotional and musical sides of Hamilton: launching a revolutionary movement, navigating political hazards, discovering fatherhood, and figuring out how to say goodbye. A robust feature for guys. Titles include: “The Story of Tonight,” “What’d I Miss,” “Dear Theodosia,” and “One Last Time.”

Johanna (from Sweeney Todd) arr. Mac Huff, TTBB with piano
From the Stephen Sondheim musical “Sweeney Todd,” this beautiful tenor “aria” is sung by Anthony in act 1 as he dreams of this beautiful and enchanting character Johanna. In act two Anthony searches through the streets for Johanna trying to rescue her from Sweeney. Todd joins in the song as he dreams of her beauty and the asylum he has her stashed. This is a show stopper for men’s choirs.

Lost in the Woods (from Frozen 2) arr. Mark Brymer, TBB with piano and optional rhythm
In a wonderfully realized gender-reversal thread in the plot of Disney’s “Frozen 2” comes this passionate ’80s rock ballad from mountain man Kristoff, accompanied by none other than singing apparitions of his reindeer and lifelong best friend, Sven. Staged on the screen to mimic the landmark music video for Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody,” this will elicit much more than a wry chuckle from your audience!

barun barune amy stephen amir haghighi

recommended by Jen Sper and Lora Moore, School Choral Music Specialists

Barun Barune arr. Amy Stephen & Amir Haghighi, SATB with piano and flute
Composed for the Vancouver Youth Choir and director Carrie Tennant, this Iranian folk song from the Kurdistan region draws on the diverse ethnic population of their rich musical heritage. The original Farsi language (also known as Persian) is used throughout, and an easy-to-understand pronunciation guide is included in the octavo with a link to a spoken version offered as a supplement.

Hashivenu arr. Michael Ryan, 3-part mixed with piano
The plaintive, soul-searching melody of this beloved Israeli folk song is beautifully suited to developing voices. Voices begin in unison and ease into simple harmony before developing into a three-part round and concluding with a gentle, ethereal coda. A delicate, independent piano part helps create an ever-flowing feel. Lovely!

marie madeleine jeanette gallant

Marie Madeleine arr. Jeanette Gallant, SATB a cappella with body percussion and spoons
Gallant’s take on this Acadian folksong is lively and engaging, featuring the quintessential elements of the tradition: podorythmie (seated foot-tapping), diddlage (mouth music), and the spoons. With playful vocal slides and energetic rhythmic motifs, this arrangement offers a modern twist on this well-loved melody from the French-Canadian oral tradition. An English (non-singing) translation is included in the leaflet, while a studio recording, pronunciation guides, and an instructional video on playing techniques are accessible through the companion website.

Malakatumba by Josu Elberdin, SAB a cappella with body percussion
Born as a game, this clever piece uses imitating sounds and nonsense vocables to form words with no real meaning. It begins with four solo voices in canon over a humming harmonic accompaniment by the choir. Then it opens into the main body of the song that is quickly built by having each voice part on its own ostinato. Add the body percussion and this will be a real showstopper!

scarborough fair matthew brown

Scarborough Fair arr. Matthew Brown, SAB with piano
With musical nods to medieval counterpoint, sonorities, and dissonances, this fresh take on the beloved English ballad is especially well-suited for choirs with smaller tenor/bass sections. The piano accompaniment offers something new, different, and supportive.

TaReKiTa by Reena Esmail, SATB a cappella
“TaReKiTa” is a refreshing concert piece that effortlessly blends the Indian and Western classical styles. The composer’s scats are combined with a fast triple meter, vocal slides, and captivating melodies built on the Jog raga. A pronunciation guide is included.

Dors, Dors, Petit Bebe arr. Victor C. Johnson, SSA with piano and optional violin
With a delicate melody, evocative harmonies, and an expressive accompaniment, this is a work that will showcase the musicality of your treble choir. Each verse is sung in Cajun French, which is easily learned, while the original middle section is in English. An optional violin part enhances the gentle mood. A pronunciation guide and translation are included.

Shule Aroon arr. Ruth Elaine Schram, 3-part mixed with piano and optional violin
Create an authentic Celtic experience with your choir when you perform this arrangement of the 18th-century Irish folk song. A mixture of thoughtful rubato and energetic rhythms, a Gaelic chorus – written phonetically throughout – and an optional violin obbligato all contribute to the lively Celtic flavor and flair.

wangolo ruth morris gray

Wangolo arr. Ruth Morris Gray, 3-part mixed with piano and optional percussion (opt. a cappella)
Some history: this song comes from Haiti, but actually refers to the first King of Angola, Ngolo Kiluanje, who was revered as a great king. The Creole word for “king” (“wa”) plus the king’s name (“Ngolo”) became “Wangolo.” It’s an authentic folk song recalling the peace and prosperity the Angolan people enjoyed before colonization. This rhythmic rendition, which may be performed without piano if desired, includes optional body percussion, suggested parts for djembe and other instruments, optional solos in the call and response section, plus a final descant that tops off the triadic parallel harmonies. Check out the free online ChoreoTrax video for some creative riser choreography.

The Wellerman arr. Roger Emerson, TTBB a cappella
If you were anywhere near the TikTok app in 2020, you undoubtedly heard this 1800s-era New Zealand sea shanty, possibly sung in a thick, Scottish brogue, perhaps accompanied by a dance. We get it – you want to sing this song, and Roger Emerson has your choir covered!

take time in life mark burrows

Take Time in Life arr. Mark Burrows, 3-part mixed a cappella with percussion
“Take time in life, better take time in life, ’cause you got far way to go.” This authentic Liberian folk tune presents a positive message for living in this spirited piece. The text is in English, as that is the official language of Liberia, but the style and groove are solidly West African. Add the percussion to the a cappella setting for a dynamic performance!

Aiken Drum arr. Blake Richter, SA with piano, fiddle and optional guitar & drums
“Aiken Drum,” a popular Scottish folk song and nursery rhyme, features a simple refrain and charming additional lyrics by the arranger that offer a message of hope.

Dide ta Deo arr. Mark Weston, 3-part mixed with piano and percussion
Add excitement to your concert program with this Mark Weston adaptation of a traditional Nigerian folk song that tells the story of a safe return home. The percussion parts illuminate the driving beat and spirit-filled emotion, and a pronunciation guide and translation are included.

Üsküdar arr. Mark Burrows, 2-part with piano and optional oboe, finger cymbals, tambourine & dumbek
This energetic setting of the Turkish folk song utilizes repetition so that the short Turkish text, once learned, becomes easier with each repetition of the chorus. The tempo increases as the arrangement builds, creating a whirling and exciting effect. Incorporate the optional oboe, finger cymbals, tambourine, and dumbek for added authenticity. A pronunciation guide and translation are provided.

Open String March by Jiyoung Um, Grade B
Using only the notes on the open strings, unison writing, and simple quarter- and eighth-note rhythms, this exciting and very accessible original work is the perfect choice for a beginning orchestra’s first performance. This piece also provides an excellent tool to introduce young players to dynamics and double stops. A simple piano accompaniment provides an excellent harmonic backdrop.

On a Swing by Lauren Bernofsky, Grade 0.5
Lauren Bernofsky wants young string players to love playing music, from the very beginning of their studies. Therefore, she likes writing early-level pieces that are fun, yet pedagogically helpful. “On a Swing” is played on only open strings, so students can focus on their bow holds and bowing without having to think about left-hand fingers. The piece gets its harmonic and rhythmic interest from the piano part. This work is dedicated to Sandy Mutchler, who fondly remembers her dear friend, the strings pedagogue Linda Luebke. The title and feel of the piece reflect the times they spent together on a porch swing. The back-and-forth motion of the swing is imitated in the up-and-down bows. Students should think of a relaxed, swinging motion with their bodies as they play this piece.

Chaps ‘n Spurs by Susan Day, Grade 2
This upbeat Western themed grade 2 piece features lively melodies for all, with teaching opportunities to reinforce accents, hooked bows, pizzicato, two note slurs, lifts, cello divisi, slides, dynamics, and easy rhythms. Written in the key of G throughout, the opening theme is announced by all the upper strings in unison. Care should be taken not to make the notes too short and choppy. This fun and happy piece is perfect for any performance occasion!

Viva Amadeus! by W.A. Mozart/arr. Richard Meyer, Grade 2
It’s Mozart with a Latin twist! “Viva Amadeus!” arranged by Richard Meyer is a charming reworking of “Eine Kleine Nachtmusik.” It is sure to make your audience smile while providing your students with opportunities to work on syncopation and “south of the border” dance rhythms. Fun for everyone, as all the sections take turns stepping into the melodic spotlight. Latin percussion parts add to the cha-cha feel of this irresistible celebration. Olé!

Luminosity by Liam Ramsey-White, Grade 3.5
Brilliant, fresh and bright! Newcomer Liam Ramsey-White has created a piece that is truly luminous. Work on bell-tone techniques and harmonics as well as mixed-meter in this accessible grade 3 piece for string orchestra. The piece uniquely ends on a “fade-out” effect, that will spice up any concert program.

Drops of Sun by Sean O’Loughlin, Grade 3.5
“Drops of Sun” was written to provide teaching opportunities around the concept of “composite rhythms.” Composer Sean O’Loughlin writes “Throughout my career, I have always had a fascination with composite rhythms and how they sound to an audience. ‘Drops of Sun’ explores this concept and more to provide many wonderful musical teaching opportunities to the advancing string ensemble.”

This setting of a cherished piano solo Grainger crafted in the early part of the 1900s permits the teaching of opposing articulations in a very musical setting. “Spoon River” arranged by Michael Story features a dance-like melody that will be well received in any performance.

Invicta by Soon Hee Newbold, Grade 1.5
Showcase a student or bring in a guest artist to perform with your beginning students! Included are advanced solo violin and viola parts along with easier violin and viola solos as an option. Highlighting the strength and resilience of the human spirit, the piece utilizes some of Newbold’s favorite string techniques to show off the violin/viola. An included piano part works well for recitals.

From Sea to Shining Sea by Steve Parsons, Grade 4
This 6/8 concert march by Steve Parsons is fresh and dynamic. Bursting with excitement, “From Sea to Shining Sea” is a great concert opener or closer.

Arabian Sandscapes by Rossano Galante, Grade 4
“Arabian Sandscapes” by Rossano Galante is a stunning work that opens with a bold, unison statement of the main theme by the brasses. After the introduction, a rhythmic ostinato follows in the winds, which, by adding the horns and trumpets, creates an even more heroic feel. The piece then yields to a lyrical, plaintive theme for a contrasting section of this emotional work. A recapitulation of the main theme drives the piece to a riveting climax depicting the faraway lands of Arabia.

Sondheim arr. Stephen Bulla, Grade 4
Covering a diverse span of Stephen Sondheim’s most popular musicals, here is a polished symphonic setting of highlights from his illustrious catalog. Deserving a feature spot on any program, this medley includes: “The Ballad of Sweeney Todd,” “Putting It Together,” “Send In the Clowns,” “Old Friends,” ”Children Will Listen,” and “Into the Woods.”

Haven’s Conviction by David Samuel, Grade 4
Written during the Covid-19 pandemic, “Haven’s Conviction” is inspired by the perseverance of students facing overwhelming obstacles. Composer David Samuel has created a great new work for the concert band repertoire.
