You Are a Yes! Especially for Middle School Choir 29 August, 2022

recommended by Jen Sper and Lora Moore, School Choral Music Specialists

You Are a Yes! by Mark Burrows, 3-part mixed/SAB with piano
This uplifting choral is bursting with positive energy and inspiring lyrics that encourage the singer, as well as the listener, to believe in themselves and find the courage to live their life to the fullest! “You are a yes! You are an inspiration, a story to be told. You are a yes! You are a celebration, a wonder to behold.”

Ten Thousand Miles by Ruth Morris Gray, SAB with piano and optional body percussion
How fun! A unique setting of words adapted from a familiar English folk song. Handclaps, leg taps, and brushing palms decorate each voice part from the first statement of their independent line to the final layered recap. A departure from the traditional tune and tempo, Ruth’s jaunty melody and andante interpretation creates a feeling of motion in triple meter, representing a return to home.

Risseldy, Rosseldy arr. Blake Richter, SA with piano
“Risseldy, Rosseldy” is an energetic folksong composed of absolute nonsense! Great for teaching concepts like articulation, expression, and dynamics, and tons of fun!

Bringers of Noise by Kyle Pederson, SAB with piano and taiko drum
This is different! Using a fictional language combined with a powerful English text, this exceptional piece effectively combines narration, rhythmic chanting and whispers, singing, vocal percussion, stomps with drum, and a driving piano accompaniment to create an atmosphere of drama and mystique. Not to be missed!

Pirates of the Cherry Tree by Penny Rodriguez, 2-part with piano
It’s a creative day of play as kids imagine themselves pirates on a grand outdoor adventure. Contemporary poet Nanci Milam pens a colorful course and a compelling cast of characters, with a detailed account of their quest. Composer Penny Rodriguez adds a jaunty compound meter, cheerful minor key, and a few sudden dynamic changes to enhance the drama and capture the spirit. A perfect pairing of music and lyrics, a treasure for younger singers!

Poor Wayfaring Stranger arr. Christi Jones, SAB with piano (optional a cappella)
With ostinato-like phrases throughout, Jones’ rhythmic and interesting arrangement of this beloved African-American spiritual will suit the needs of developing mixed choirs. Whether performed with piano accompaniment or a cappella, it’s wonderful voice leading and harmonic structure make it a sure-to-please “win” for any concert.

Glad Adoration: Recommended Anthems for Fall 2022 24 August, 2022

recommended by Jennifer F., Sacred Choral Music Specialist

Glad Adoration arr. Molly Ijames, SATB with piano and optional brass, winds & percussion
This memorable arrangement of LOBE DEN HERREN (Praise to the Lord, the Almighty) pulls out all the stops! Opening in 6/8, it features effective vocal layering, lush harmonies, some metric shifts, and a brilliant piano accompaniment. A key change signals the entrance of a contrasting 3/4 verse; the opening 6/8 material returns for a big finish. Equally at home in the sanctuary or concert hall, it boasts optional accompaniment for brass, winds, and percussion.

To Sing Once More by Craig Courtney, SATB with piano
“Awake our souls to sing once more the songs that long have silent been…” Jonathan Cook’s text finds a poignant and rich musical setting from Craig Courtney in this anthem for SATB chorus and piano, suitable for general worship or comfort and healing after times of silence or loss.

Amazing Grace! How Sweet the Sound arr. Lloyd Larson, SATB with piano and optional orchestra
From the hymn collection “A Festival of Hymns,” this majestic arrangement of Amazing Grace resounds in a dynamic arrangement for choir, keyboard, and optional orchestra. The congregation can join the choir on verses one and five. Incorporating a shift into minor for the third verse, the message is given fresh life with a powerful key change that leads into a climactic ending.

Face to Face arr. Larry Shackley, SATB with piano
Opening with a vibrant 6/8 groove, this beloved southern gospel hymn will please choir and congregation alike. A contrasting 4/4 middle verse with straighter accompaniment provides a pleasant moment of repose until the 6/8 groove returns to close the anthem. The meaningful text is handled sensitively, and pianists will enjoy playing the authentic gospel accompaniment.

Glorious Name arr. Mary McDonald, SATB with piano and optional rhythm
Arranged in a soulful gospel groove, this hymn classic opens with stylized three-part vocals, then layers in the basses, building in intensity through two key changes and the rising refrain, “Glorious is thy name!” The optional rhythm accompaniment adds to the fun.

Holy God, We Praise Your Name arr. Larry Shackley, SATB with organ and optional trumpet
This beloved, majestic hymn is one of the great treasures of Christian hymnody. Larry Shackley’s masterful arrangement perfectly captures its spirit, with creative choral writing, brilliant organ accompaniment, and a festive (opt.) trumpet obbligato. A soprano descant adds dimension and energy on the final verse.

I’m a-Rolling (with This World Is Not My Home) arr. Larry Shackley, SATB with piano and optional rhythm
Enjoy this rollicking combination of the spiritual “I’m a-Rolling” and the gospel song “This World Is Not My Home.” Together they are a rousing reminder that, although a believer’s road may be rocky, there is a glorious reward at its end. The optional rhythm section parts will add an extra spark to the choir’s performance.

In the Shadow of His Wings by Lloyd Larson, SATB with piano
“As the path leads through sorrow, will the Lord still be my stay? Jesus answers with His presence and makes my spirit sing, in the shadow of His wing.” Lloyd Larson is at his best in this setting of Carol Hodge’s comforting text, providing an accessible anthem that speaks deeply of comfort and protection.

Just a Closer Walk with Thee arr. Joel Raney, SATB with piano and optional orchestra
This traditional spiritual is presented here in a sweeping, lush treatment with a mini-orchestration arranged by Ed Hogan. Briefly quoting, “Leaning on the Everlasting Arms,” the combination of tunes and beautiful, slow, gospel harmonies build to a thrilling conclusion.

My Lord, What a Morning arr. Victor C. Johnson, SATB with piano
Here’s a beloved American spiritual, sensitively prepared for school and church singers by Victor C. Johnson. The familiar strophic melody is fully arranged with progressively richer sonorities throughout. Expressive tempo markings stretch the final moment of every phrase and suggest more motion for the “hear the trumpet sound” verse. A lovely piano accompaniment does not double, but rather decorates the satisfying choral parts. A gentle gem that grows to an impressive height before a quiet conclusion.

Living Christ, Our Rock and Foundation arr. Lloyd Larson, SATB with organ and optional brass & percussion
After a sturdy choir introduction of original music, “The Church’s One Foundation” (AURELIA) opens this regal medley of three cherished hymn tunes. Nicely varied choral writing contrasts each of the verses. Moving more quickly, “Christ Is Made the Sure Foundation” enters with the hymn tune HOLY MANNA. “How Firm a Foundation” (FOUNDATION) completes the hymn trilogy before the opening music returns to close the anthem. Optional brass and percussion add to the majesty of this great offering for Reformation, Confirmation, or general occasions.

People Need the Lord arr. Mary McDonald, SAB with piano
This Quick Study Choral is easily prepared with a minimum of rehearsals. Limited SAB harmony and an alluring use of imitative choral entries in the refrain make this a captivating anthem expressing the timeless message that, “people need the Lord.”

Psalm 117 (From All That Dwell) by Dale Peterson, SATB with piano
An exciting call to worship or general anthem, this dynamic setting of Isaac Watt’s text on “Psalm 117 (From All that Dwell)” features memorable melodic gestures. A driving accompaniment supports the vocal syncopation and occasional mixed meter. Brief moments of a cappella singing provide nice contrast.

Shall We Gather at the River arr. David Lantz III, SATB with piano
Jazz harmonies and a vocal solo give new interest and life to the well-loved Robert Lowry folk hymn in this fresh setting by David Lantz. Smooth voice-leading means your church or community choir can focus on nuances of text and phrasing for meaningful communication that will resonate deeply with your audience.

A Thousand Tongues to Sing arr. Mary McDonald, SATB with organ and optional instrumental ensemble
This majestic hymn concertato, features, SATB voices, organ, a small instrumental ensemble, and optional congregation. Perfect for concert or celebration in worship. Join the thousand tongues, and sing!

We Gather to Praise arr. Mary McDonald, SATB or SAB with piano and optional rhythm
Masterfully weaving together two beloved Gaither songs, this alluring ballad gathers us in to “praise the Father, Holy Spirit, Son.” The optional rhythm embraces the warm, southern gospel groove.

Battle of the Bows: Teaching Pieces for Orchestra 19 August, 2022

recommended by Eric Stratton and Megan W., Orchestra Specialists

Battle of the Bows by Chris Thomas, Grade 2.5
Experience a contest of strength, bravery, and determination. With constant momentum and energy, the music explores a range of articulations and dynamics as each section competes for supremacy. Bravado, dynamic contrast, independence, and excitement – it is all here and ready to showcase your orchestra!

Percentage of Error by Jeremiah Clarke/arr. Bob Phillips, Grade 1.5
This arrangement of “The Prince of Denmark March,” or “Trumpet Voluntary,” provides the perfect setting for advocacy and striving for excellence since it is so recognizable. Three different versions of the final 8 bars, containing incorrect notes, are included. Each version contains an increasing percentage of correct pitches. Each represents a different letter grade. Play all four versions and then explain to parents and administration that the A+, 100% correct version is what we do every day in orchestra. All sections play the melody in this piece, still providing a solid musical setting in a novelty piece. Audience members are sure to recognize it which makes it perfect for finding “errors.” Along with the “real” music for the final 8 bars, three other versions are included. The first version has 80% of the correct notes and 20% incorrect. The next has 90% correct notes and 10% incorrect. The next has 95% correct notes and 5% incorrect. The final, “real” version has 100% correct notes. The 100% version should be played first for the audience explaining this version would get an A+ in an academic setting. Then play the 80% or B- version, then the 90% or A- Version, and then the 95% A version. Then explain to parents and administration that the only version that is acceptable is the 100% version and that is what we do every day in orchestra. This provides a perfect advocacy moment to discuss the benefits of music education with parents and a tangible explanation of striving for excellence to parents and students. Includes an educational packet with each part that features technical exercises, history, theory, composition, and more.

Arco Polo by Ingrid Koller, Grade 1.5-3
This engaging piece for string orchestra is appropriate for any time of the year but is especially fun for a summer orchestra concert. “Arco Polo” is a musical depiction of the well-known swimming-pool game Marco Polo. The piece begins tutti pizzicato, but then the instruments “call out” to each other using their bows. This is a multilevel piece which makes it a practical choice for an orchestra with students at varying skill levels. It can stand alone as a Level 1.5 piece, but with the addition of the advanced violin, viola, and cello parts it becomes even more challenging and fun. For yet another layer of fun, there is an optional improvisational section where students are randomly (perhaps secretly) selected to be the “caller” and the rest of the orchestra answers. As an extra surprise for the orchestra and audience, an audience member can be cued to literally call out to the orchestra.

5th Avenue Rock by Kathryn Griesinger, Grade 0.5
This rocking piece for beginning strings is based on the interval of a perfect fifth – thus the title! Students can practice easy string crossings on open strings, simple rhythms, and stepwise finger patterns. Violin 2 doubles viola and cello doubles bass to build confidence and create a full sound. The piano and drum set fill in during rests, allowing the young orchestra to shine in its very first concert.

Thundersnow by Katie O’Hara LaBrie, Grade 2.5
Imagine being in the midst of a blizzard. Snow swirling and blowing everywhere! Then suddenly, out of nowhere… BOOM! It’s “Thundersnow!” This new work for string orchestra is sure to excite and impress both students and audiences alike!

Molto Perpetuo by David Bobrowitz, Medium Easy
This work for strings has a lot to say and even more opportunities to teach. Delicate bowing considerations will help strengthen legato bowing on the offbeats as well as reinforce staccato and pizzicato. Each section has meaningful material. A useful teaching piece that will sound great in performance too!

Beathoven by Stephen Spottswood, Grade 4
This hip-hop orchestration incorporates technology and should be played with the audio track (mp3 download) and a speaker. “Beathoven” cleverly combines hip-hop and classical styles. The result is a head bopping, rhythm rocking ensemble piece that ebbs and flows between the 18th century and the 21st century. Teachers can focus on syncopated rhythms, the pentatonic scale, playing with a staccato bow stroke, and making a contrast in dynamics.

Singing, Bring Me: High School Choir for Fall 2022 17 August, 2022

singing bring me ryan main

recommended by Jen Sper and Lora Moore, School Choral Music Specialists

FOR MIXED CHOIRS
Singing, Bring Me
by Ryan Main, SATB a cappella with percussion
A joy-filled journey through the many gifts that singing brings us! Memorable lines and contemporary harmonies are backed by energetic percussion for shaker, tambourine, and cajon. Easy to learn and satisfying to perform, this a cappella original is a perfect vehicle to help your choir start moving and expressing on stage.

Benedicamus Domino by Victor C. Johnson, SATB with piano and optional trumpet
Majestic and exuberant, this quintessential concert/contest selection opens and closes with an accented Latin text theme. In the contrasting middle, a chant-like “Resonet in laudibus” softens and slows before returning to the rhythmic feel. As expected from experienced writer, Victor Johnson, each voicing is sensitive to appropriate ranges and tessitura for developing voices. An optional trumpet fanfare is included in the octavo.

Star Light by Trevor Tran, SATB with piano
It is a child’s poem to see the first star and make a wish that has been set to music. Most importantly, the music does not get in the way. The youthfulness and hope persists. Best of all is a place when singers can step forward and state their wish, bringing the piece into more than a song – an experience. Uniquely wonderful.

Watercolor Morning by Ruth Elaine Schram, SSAB with piano
The stark black and white of winter is infused with color as life blossoms anew with the lushness of springtime. Flowers bloom, the sun shines in a sky of blue; everything changes as the air warms and we bid winter goodbye on a gorgeous “watercolor morning.” Beautiful melodies and harmonies grace this expressive original, an especially good choice for spring or year-end performances. A Learning Resource page is included.

Where the Light Begins by Susan LaBarr, SATB with piano
This is an accessible and fresh work for SATB choirs on the themes of peace and hope. Approachable vocal lines and a supportive accompaniment make this appropriate for young choirs, while the rich and universal text will also work for high school, college, and community groups.

FOR TREBLE CHOIRS
Awakening
by Christi Jones, SSA with piano
Jones’ powerful SSA composition for treble choirs, based on the poem by Harlem Renaissance writer James Weldon Johnson, is both haunting and evocative. In d minor with a driving rhythmic piano accompaniment, treble choirs will feel empowered singing this fabulous piece!

Colorful by Philip E. Silvey, SSA with piano and optional cello
The quote from Laurel Thatcher Ulrich: “Well-behaved women seldom make history” is the inspiration for this moving and thought provoking new piece by Philip Silvey. There is a QR code included with the music that will take you and your students to additional SEL resources including videos from the composer to lead you and your students to find the intersection between the music and the words.

Sing Alleluia, Clap Your Hands by Sally K. Albrecht, SSAA a cappella with hand claps
Stacked vocal lines and counterpoint handclaps sound (and look) stunning! Each voice part introduces its own independent melody with claps, until everything combines in joyful polyphony. Some chordal singing and a call-and-response section provide contrast before an energized reprise leads to the brilliant final flourish. A remarkably effective concert/contest feature, newly available for SSAA groups.

FOR TENOR/BASS CHOIRS
Journey On
by Derrick Fox, TTB with piano
This music, with lyrics by the composer, speaks to the impact of relationships that we build throughout our lives. It is an excellent outlet for communicating emotions and gives your tenor/bass choirs an opportunity to explore a text that moves beyond stereotypes.

Lift Your Eyes to Light by Kyle Pederson, TBB with piano
Given everything our communities, choir, and world have experienced recently, we could all use a bit of light. This music encourages us to tend to our hearts and to others, remembering that each of us has the power to bring light into our own lives-and into the lives of others.
