Little Critters by Brian Balmages, Grade 1
The vivid imagery of “little critters” scurrying about at night inspires the melodic lines and creative harmonies used throughout this programmatic work. Beginning soft and mischievous, the music builds as new critters join the fun in a playful dialogue. The harmonic language moves between moments of pleasant consonance and slight dissonance (because as we all know, some people love little critters and some people are terrified of them!). A highly imaginative, playable work!

Robot Factory by Chris M. Bernotas, Grade 1
Special effects, pizzicato, and a variety of dynamics will make “Robot Factory” by Chris M. Bernotas exciting for your beginning orchestra students. The key of E minor provides a dark sound, and all sections get to play the energetic melody! This piece will be a great feature or perfect closer to any contest or concert.

Five Before Beethoven by Brian Balmages, Grade 1.5-2
A great compliment to the composer’s popular work “A Beethoven Lullaby,” this original piece pays homage to Beethoven’s fifth symphony, immersing students in the style of the first movement without feeling like they are playing a watered-down arrangement. Conductors will surely notice the many nods (both subtle and not so subtle) to Beethoven’s masterpiece while also exploring original themes.

Puttin’ on the Pizz by Chris M. Bernotas, Grade 1
“Puttin’ on the Pizz” by Chris Bernotas is sure to become a favorite selection of students and directors. The descending bass line sets the stage for this fun piece. All notes stay in first position and the string orchestra plays pizzicato throughout. Students also have the chance to act as the percussion section. With the optional use of ‘swinging’ eighth notes, “Puttin’ on the Pizz” could be a fun way to introduce a jazzy style to the string orchestra. Everyone in the audience (and in the orchestra) will be tapping their toes to this piece. Violin 2 and Viola are doubled, as are Cello and String Bass, which will work perfectly for younger string orchestras.

Perpetuum by Paul Barker, Grade 2.5
“Perpetuum” is a lively and contemporary addition to any concert performance with its memorable melodic lines and relentless driving rhythms. The piece begins with a powerful introduction to the main theme which is ingeniously augmented as the piece powers forward. The middle section provides a warm, lyrical contrast performed by the lower strings. The main theme returns with a wall of sound heading to a dramatic close. This beautifully expressive and contemporary work is a nice change of pace for orchestra students. Using the optional percussion parts are highly recommended for optimal effect.

Danza de mi Corazón (Dance of My Heart) by Steven L. Rosenhaus, Grade 2.5
Composer Steven Rosenhaus always strives to have his music connect emotionally with players and audiences alike. This energetic work does that and makes you want to dance too! It’s truly a “dance of the heart.”

bronze age jeremy woolstenhulme

The Bronze Age by Jeremy Woolstenhulme, Grade 1.5
“The Bronze Age” is an energetic work featuring accents and meter changes from 3/4 to 4/4. It’s in E minor and all music is in 1st position. A Learning Bank is included jam packed with information about this prolific time during prehistoric times when the discovery of bronze contributed to the making of strong weapons, tools, utensils, and more.

The Monster Named Stretch by Anthony Granata, Grade 2.5
Written in the eerie key of F-sharp natural minor that attracts young students, this sound defines our scary monster called “Stretch.” Each section gets important melodic and countermelodic material. With two separate sections (slow and fast), a legato middle section, a jaunty pizzicato section, and a forceful coda, every section will be challenging. The work features simple rhythm patterns to make it more accessible and allow the student to focus on the three sharps.

One of the hottest shows currently streaming is “Loki” which continues the ever expanding Marvel universe. Natalie Holt’s memorable soundtrack is dramatic and engaging, and here is a powerful arrangement of the main themes for concert band.

Conducting Men’s Choirs 28 March, 2022

recommended by Jen Sper and Lora Moore, School Choral Music Specialists

Conducting Men’s Choirs by Donald L. Trott
Inspired by Debra Spurgeon’s pioneering book Conducting Women’s Choirs, this companion resource, compiled and edited by Donald Trott, brings together the expertise of eighteen acknowledged authorities on men’s choirs. Conducting Men’s Choirs addresses the unique challenges, considerations, and joys of making music with male singers.

The book is organized into three major sections, the first of which contains historical essays on male choirs in the United States. The chapters in this section span a range of relevant topics, including glee clubs in colleges and universities, an examination of some of the nation’s most esteemed and accomplished male choirs, and the role of male community choruses in America.

The second section explores key aspects of working with male singers that are vital to the success of any conductor of male choirs. Topics addressed include:
• How to start a male choir and recruit male singers.
• Working with middle school boys and the developing adolescent voice.
• Pedagogical considerations for male voices.
• Procedures for improving intonation.
• Standing formations.
• Warm-ups.
• Women conductors of male choirs.
• How to arrange and compose for men’s choirs.

A thorough discussion of repertoire for men’s choirs rounds out this resource in the book’s third and final section. Chapter authors explore men’s choir repertoire from a variety of angles: Renaissance music, works by Schumann, Canadian repertoire, and the music of Veljo Tormis. Extensive repertoire listings with hundreds of titles for men’s chorus are also provided for quick and easy reference.

“Conducting Men’s Choirs” is essential for anyone working with male choirs in any capacity. Equally suited for novice teachers and seasoned professionals, this collaborative resource is the culmination of decades of experience and wisdom by leaders in the profession.

Rise Up arr. Audrey Snyder, SSA with piano
Here’s the piece to let your soloist shine! This inspirational, expressive, and stirring pop ballad features solo singing on each of the verses and easy to learn parts for the chorus. The piece is an excellent choice for inexperienced singers.

Lean on Me arr. Jack Zaino, 3-part mixed with piano
“Lean on Me,” the instantly recognizable standard by Bill Withers, has been called an anthem of togetherness and resilience. Tastefully set in a gospel style, this arrangement will inspire singers and audiences alike to be a friend for others to lean on.

Fill the World with Music by David Waggoner, 3-part mixed/SAB with piano
After a year with limited music making, there could be nothing better. Imagine throwing open the shutters to sing with your neighbors as this beautiful piece unfolds. It’s consistently lyrical and legato, with peaks and valleys built into the dynamics to heighten emotions and capture joy. We love this expressive piano part, especially the delicate music box-inspired introduction. Don’t miss the dramatic modulation before the pinnacle refrain crescendos to a big finish.

Be a Light arr. Tim Hayden, SAB with piano
“In a world full of hate, be a light.” These words strike a meaningful chord about our power to affect change in the world. And the memorable music of this 2020 track creates a moving ballad for our times. Recorded by Thomas Rhett, Reba McEntire, Hillary Scott, Chris Tomlin, and Keith Urban, this anthem of hope holds a significant message. Highly effective in virtual or live performance!

Dynamite arr. Audrey Snyder, 3-part mixed with piano
Written and popularized by BTS, this up tempo pop hit celebrates the exuberance of life and promotes positive self-image. Tons of fun, this arrangement is specially crafted to be easy to learn and perform.

A New Horizon by Greg Gilpin, 3-part mixed with piano
Carefully placed staccatos and well-chosen chord inversions illuminate the gospel style of this original anthem of hope. It’s a perfect pep talk or pick-me-up theme song for whenever your program needs a lift. A solo voice becomes a duet before all the singers join in and grow with intensity. Several ascending key changes raise spirits, ensuring that the uplifting message resonates. “Everything will be alright, everything will be okay, ’cause I can see a new horizon on a brand new day.”

Thoughts of Home by Victor C. Johnson, SAB with piano
“Home, a place where memories are made. Home, where I don’t have to be afraid. Home, where laughter never ends, I feel the love of family and friends, my hiding place, my safe space, is my home.” For wherever your singers feel at home, this piece with touching lyrics generated from the thoughts of young people is set in a harmonically rich musical work that will be welcome in any concert.

What Love Can Do by Mark Burrows, SAB with piano
“We will reach out, sing out, make a change. We will show the world what love can do!” These empowering lyrics were inspired by thoughts and feelings from amazing young people at a virtual conference held in 2020. Spread the important message with this stirring anthem of hope by stellar composer and youth mentor, Mark Burrows. Starts with a tiny mezzo-soprano seed and blossoms into a full bloom fortissimo. Along the way, intuitive pop rhythms, satisfying harmonies, an especially memorable bridge, a moment of a cappella, and even handclaps help to secure that full finale effect.

Multicultural Choices for Orchestra 18 March, 2022

recommended by Megan W., Orchestra Specialist

Griot’s Dance by Kirk Mosier, Grade 3
This exciting work utilizes calypso rhythms to tell its powerful story. All instruments are given equal treatment in receiving melodic content as well as calypsodic rhythmic accompaniments.

Petite Suite Française by Douglas E. Wagner, Grade 1
“Petite Suite Française” by Douglas E. Wagner is an original work of three short movements, each of which is cast in the style of a French folk song, though no specific tunes are quoted. The music is easy to grasp for younger players, and the diversity in style and scoring techniques will engage players to perform their best. Movements include: “On Y Va! (Here We Go!),” “Les Cloches de la Vallée (The Bells in the Valley),” and “Chanté avec Moi (Sing with Me).”

Circle of Rhythm (An African Motif) by Reynard Burns, Grade 2.5
Inspired by the rhythms and melodies of African culture, this inspiring original work features melodies built around a four-bar rhythmic motif. Perfect for teaching varying rhythm patterns to the young middle school orchestra. All sections are given the melody. Optional percussion part for sogo or hand drum.

Wellerman arr. Larry Moore, Medium Easy
A fun and lively arrangement of the popular New Zealand sea shanty written for young string orchestras. A wonderful opportunity to teach cut time and scale technique. The comfortable key of G, all first position and frequent doubling make this a very accessible work.

Doraji arr. Benjamin P. Snoek, Grade 2.5
This popular Korean folk song is named for the Platycodon grandiflorus or balloon flower. This beautiful setting features lush scoring, flowing counterlines, dramatic phrasing, and seamlessly passes the melody among the entire ensemble. An excellent multicultural piece that will delight musicians and concertgoers.

The French Quarter arr. Andrew R. Guarrine, Grade 0.5
This standard for beginning strings has a new twist to it. The melody is much easier to teach in 4/4 rather than in 3/4. It is still in D major and contains no altered fingerings. The tempo marking is very playable by your younger students, and the dynamic marking is always ƒ so that the orchestra can focus on the notes. The piece contains pizzicato and arco sections, with the melody in both the upper and lower strings. This easy three-part harmony arrangement has bowings marked and is a great piece to showcase strings when they are comfortable with the D major scale.

The Road to Andalusia by Eric B. Davis, Grade 3
Journey to the southern part of Spain where remnants of Moorish and Middle Eastern culture are found, along with traditional Flamenco music. These sounds, melodies and harmonies are used in an almost constant motion with animated and accented rhythms throughout. From the opening measures, these elements leap off the page. Every part has something essential and interesting to play that feels natural, while giving the performers the opportunity to explore different parts of the bow with various articulations and colors.

Mingo the Dingo by Karen Koger, Grade 1
Commissioned by Mesa Public Schools in Arizona for 6th-grade feeder concerts, “Mingo” features sonorous three-part writing within the D-major scale.

Mysh Marsh (Mouse March) by Karen Koger, Grade 2
Burly mice in warm fur hats stomp with deliberate steps through the “Mysh Marsh” (Russian Mouse March). Violas and cellos move between divisi, pizzicato and arco in the key of D minor with plenty of dynamic contrast. Upper and lower strings pass the melody back and forth, keeping those serious rodents moving along with counter-rhythms and dramatic crescendos.

Pupusas Especiales by Karen Koger, Grade 2.5
The winning title from one of Sarah Moulder’s students at Cesar Chavez Academy, CA inspired the piece “Pupusas Especiales.” Enjoyed by the people of El Salvador and Honduras, Pupusas are Hand Pies – simple bread pockets filled with beans, meats, or cheese. “Pupusas Especiales” (Special Hand Pies) celebrates El Salvadoran and Honduran culture through a joyful dance in G major with syncopation and accents with the option of adding a Guitarrón and Claves to enhance the festive dance feel. A fun harmonic sequence from Caleb Zak, a student from Mount Vernon HS in Ohio, occurs towards the end of “Pupusas Especiales.”

Spoon River by Percy Grainger/arr. Michael Story, Grade 2
This setting of a cherished piano solo Grainger crafted in the early part of the 1900s permits the teaching of opposing articulations in a very musical setting. “Spoon River” arranged by Michael Story features a dance-like melody that will be well received in any performance.

Hip-Hop Strings Workshop

Bring Stephen to your school! This class will develop string musicians in a small ensemble, with one player to a part, using hip-hop arrangements.

  • Collaboration: Chamber Music involves working together equally, sharing opinions and striving to come together to make something beautiful. Each individual voice is important, and so is the collaboration of the voices together.
  • Responsibility: When there is only one student to a part, there is no ability to hide and each student must be responsible for learning his or her music! With such a small ensemble, attendance and punctuality also become very important; students must be responsible for regular, faithful attendance and being on time for rehearsals and/or coachings.
  • Intonation: In small ensembles, students must focus and learn the skill of playing in tune.
  • Performance Skills: The ability to perform in front of an audience is another skill that is honed in chamber music. Control of performance nerves translates to auditions, interviews, presentations, and any type of public speaking.
  • Hip-Hop Motivates!: Spending time with friends and playing music that students love!

recommended by Jen Sper and Lora Moore, School Choral Music Specialists

Lift Every Voice and Sing arr. Roland Carter, SATB divisi with piano
“Lift Every Voice and Sing,” often referred to as the Black National Anthem in the U.S., is arranged here by Roland Carter. Accessible vocal writing with a celebratory accompaniment makes this a great selection for honor choirs and festivals.

The Storm Is Passing Over arr. Barbara W. Baker, 3-part treble with piano
Even choirs with limited experience singing gospel music will be able to perform the syncopated and heavily accented vocal parts with ease. The final repeated chorus features stunning dynamic contrasts, hand claps and a dramatic ritard before the final ending. A very strong choice!

If I Can Help Somebody arr. André J. Thomas, SATB with piano
Commissioned by St. Olaf University and music programs to honor and celebrate 30 years of service-minded leadership by Anton Armstrong. Long time friend and colleague André Thomas was the perfect choice to arrange this powerful and inspirational song. These lyrics have certainly been a guiding principal in Anton’s career and they will inspire you and your singers as well.

O, I Got a Light arr. Brandon Waddles, SSA with piano
Brandon Waddles’ incredibly unique compositional voice comes through in this awesome arrangement of “O, I Got a Light.” The musical and textual sophistication of this work makes it suitable for both younger and more experienced treble singers.

Rise, Shine! arr. Marques L.A. Garrett, SATB divisi a cappella
A rousing rendition of the well-known spiritual. The piece begins slowly and crescendos into a jubilant exhortation to let your light shine.

I’ll Fly Away arr. Brandon A. Boyd, SATB divisi with piano and optional bass & percussion
An up-tempo and challenging setting of this gospel favorite. A wonderful festival piece with a fun piano accompaniment.

I Will Sing by Michael Engelhardt, TTBB with piano and optional rhythm
“What will I do with the portion given to me? I will sing.” This fantastic work by Michael Engelhardt will be a great addition to honor choirs, festivals, and more. Gospel style, but with an ecumenical text that challenges each of us to make the most of the lives we’ve been given.

Full STEAM Ahead by Abigail Blair & Kathryn Finch
“Full STEAM Ahead” is full of lessons to turn your music room into a place where imagination and creativity are not just encouraged, but essential.

The lessons are divided into three sections:
• The Music Room as a Makerspace – Let your students’ imaginations go wild as they build shakers and shadow puppets, tell stories with apps and green screens, and learn all the elements that go into a Broadway musical.
• Coding the Music Room – With a few tech tools, your students will compose melodies and variations, explore modes, add sound effects to stories, and find solutions to help others solve issues that arise in the music room.
• Digital Audio Workstations (DAW) – Introduce your musicians to modern composition tools they can use to explore form, design sound, compose their own music, and unlock the mysteries of the synthesizer.

No matter the lesson, your students will demonstrate their understanding of the concepts you already teach – rhythm, melody, harmony, timbre, and form – using the tools, concepts, and standards of Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math. The key to this book’s effectiveness is that it trains you as a STEAM teacher today while detailing well-structured lessons for your students to help them become the empathetic creators of tomorrow. General music teachers – and STEAM and Makerspace pros – Abigail Blair and Kathryn Finch have truly given you all the tools you need to take your music lessons to the next level.

If I Had a Hammer arr. Craig Hella Johnson, SATB divisi a cappella with bongo drum & cymbal
Craig Hella Johnson has become well known for “outside the box” programming, composing and arranging. Here is another great example. This folk song written by Bob Seeger and Lee Hays in 1949 in support of the Progressive movement and later made popular by Peter, Paul and Mary is here arranged with a driving motif “If I Had A Hammer” by SATB divisi chorus. Hand percussion underpins this motif and the melody floats above.

What’s Going On arr. Rollo Dilworth, SSATB a cappella with optional string bass & cajón
Rollo Dilworth’s arrangement of Marvin Gaye’s landmark title track from the #1 album of all time (according to Rolling Stone) should be at the top of every choir’s wishlist. Funk and soul wrapped up in a timeless protest song – what more could you want?

Stand Up (from Harriet) arr. Téa Douglas, SSAA a cappella with body percussion
The Douglas family, inspiring us all to do good and love someone (DGLS), have recorded this extremely powerful arrangement of the 2020 Oscar-winning Best Original Song from “Harriet.” Premiered at the 2021 ACDA Virtual National Conference, this rendition cuts straight through to the heart.

No Color by Stacey V. Gibbs & Shawn Kirchner, SATB divisi with piano
This is a monumental work from composers Stacey Gibbs and Shawn Kirchner. The lyrics challenge ideas of racism and discrimination while the music combines jazz and traditional choral techniques. “No Color” offers choirs the chance to declare that no color can come between us.

Edges of the Night by Mark Patterson, SSAA with piano and optional xylophone
“Edges of the Night” sheds light on the crisis facing hundreds of thousands of families who have fled Central America in recent years to find safety and refuge. Add the xylophone to increase the intensity of sound.

One Million Voices by Brian Tate, SATB with piano
This original gospel-style piece uses a constantly growing, repeating melody to build strong energy and emotion throughout. It was inspired by the courage of individuals who are willing to take risks to come forward, speak their truths, and stand up for human rights. Easy to learn with a powerful message.

We Shall Overcome arr. Shelton Ridge Love, TTBB a cappella
A strong, resolute setting of the familiar civil rights “marching song” vividly calls to mind the images which add depth of meaning and emotion to the notes sung. From the distant beginning to the powerful final statement, this arrangement calls us to stand with, and for, all those in the long fight for justice. This TTBB a cappella setting can be sung in any location.

Secret for the Mad arr. George Chung, SSAB with piano
British singer, songwriter Dodie says “I wrote this for a friend who I heard was going through a rough time. Today, though, I sang it for myself.” This song offers a proactive opportunity for you and your students to discuss ways to deal with worry and anxiety. This is a powerful message set to an equally powerful melody. This is the first in an exciting new series curated by Carrie Tennant.

Asteroids by Michael Story, Grade 1
There are almost one million asteroids in our solar system, with the main asteroid belt lying in orbit around the sun between Mars and Jupiter. Asteroids can range in size from less than 33 feet to around 580 miles in diameter. Based on notable asteroids and the mythological figures they were named for, Michael Story’s “Asteroids” is a mini suite that contains three contrasting pieces: Pallas, Ceres, and Vesta.

Cook Strait Crossing by Laura Estes, Grade 1
Based on a true story from New Zealand, composer Laura Estres presents an ideal piece for historical lesson plans, as well as for contest and festival performance. Students will learn from – and love – “Cook Strait Crossing.”

Deimos (Bringer of Terror) by Timothy Loest, Grade 0.5
Many know “Mars, the Bringer of War.” Now meet his diabolical son Deimos, the Bringer of Terror. Fashioned in the style of Holst, this work uses driving rhythms, dark harmonies, and an asymmetrical form to personify Deimos, the Greek mythological god of terror and the namesake of Mars’ second moon. Enjoy this first offering from Loest’s suite “The Moons.”

Distant Journeys by Chris M. Bernotas, Grade 1
A strong sense of rhythm, dramatic melodic lines, and tension and release characterize the sound and feel of “Distant Journeys.” The rhythmic nature of this piece gives the sense of traveling and adventure.

Monsters, Unite! by Kelly Dugger, Grade 1
“Monsters, Unite!” by Kelly Dugger is a fun beginning band piece that is sure to be a hit, not only at Halloween time but all year round. Monsters all around the world are waking up to a calling to unite. Some are big, hairy creatures, and others are delicate and fairy-like. They walk and fly long distances to find each other. In the end, they all come together, marching as one. Just when you think they’ve marched off into the distance, they come together to surprise the audience. Unique percussion effects – timpani glissando and theremin (or flexatone) – add to the spooky sound. A tuba solo at the end is followed by a surprising scream that will leave the performers and the audience giggling!

A Scottish Festival by Brian Balmages, Grade 1
This spirited work depicts a parade in Scotland from a spectator’s viewpoint. Based on the popular folk song “Aiken Drum,” the piece layers various elements to create the iconic sound of Scottish pipes and drums. Original music intertwines with Celtic sounds as the parade reaches its peak with a full battery of percussion contributing to the joyous atmosphere.

Wings to the Mind by Brian Balmages, Grade 0.5

A Woodland Celebration by Robert Sheldon, Grade 1
